And here we go. 15 games that may in fact determine the direction of the franchise this season, up coming trades and even strategy for the off-season. What's better than that? Also, have y'all seen this: baseballsavant.com/apps/umpires.php?sort=percent&year=allIn an age where we are so technologically blessed, all umpires are an abomination behind the plate. But some are much more abdominal than others.

For those who missed it, Johnson is in the rotation - they're just deciding if it's better to pitch him on Monday against the Angels or Tuesday against the Astros.

I think it's a great thing to have Johnson with the team for a week or so before his first start. Pitchers are such creatures of habit that I'm sure it helps to be comfortable in a routine with his new teammates and getting to know the catchers.

When is Springer back?
Edit: Not soon.
Yeah I would throw him against Houston. Jimed made some good points, and from a matchup standpoint it could be worse. Altuve and Correa are the only ones who crush LHP on that team.

The Sox roster here shows an open position. Any news on who is going to fill it?

For those who missed it, Johnson is in the rotation - they're just deciding if it's better to pitch him on Monday against the Angels or Tuesday against the Astros. They screwed this up already. They happen to have the next five teams alternating in terms of platoon splits (OPS+ relative to league versus LHP, RHP): Angels 105, 98 Astros 93, 110 Tigers 125, 114 WhiteSox 59, 89 Rays 106, 87 Plus, if Wright's going to be the 5th starter, you waste a significant portion of his value pitching him on the last day of a series. And I think he'd reap the most benefit from pitching in front of Porcello, another RHP. Finally, I'm not sure why Miley is starting the series, pitching on 4 days rest, when ERod is the better pitcher anyway ... but Miley has been rather better in his career on 4 days rest than 5, so that may be it. They should have gone: Miley, Rodriguez, Wright, Porcello versus the Angels Johnson, Miley, Rodriguez versus the Astros Wright, Porcello, Kelly or Masterson versus the Tigers Johnson, Miley, Rodriguez versus the White Sox Wright, Porcello, Johnson versus the Rays Instead, it looks like (downgrades in bold): Miley, Porcello, Rodriguez, Wright versus the Angels (wasted knuckleball effect) Johnson, Miley, Porcello versus the Astros Rodriguez, Wright, Kelly or Masterson versus Tigers (one would hope they start Johnson versus the 59 vs. LHP club rather than the 125) Johnson, Miley, Porcello versus the White Sox Rodriguez, Wright, Johnson versus the Rays Porcello is facing the Astros and White Sox (110 and 89 versus RHP), when he could have faced the Tigers and Rays (114 and 87), which is pretty much a wash. However, Rodriguez is facing the Tigers and Rays (125 and 106 versus LHP) instead of the Astros and White Sox (93 and 59). That's not a wash. That's enormous. Plus, instead of Wright helping Porcello three times, you have him helping him once, plus Kelly or Masterson's presumed spot start. I really don't think it's anyone's job to figure this stuff out. It's certainly not Bill James', and I think Tom Tippett is too busy with deeper, broader, stuff. If it's in the hands of interns, they're not very good, are they?

“@timbritton: Napoli will start the three games this series against lefties. Holt will go back to his super-utility role with Pedroia back.”

Wilson throws a pitch nearly in the dirt...and gets the called strike.
MLB umpires, everyone.

It comes together now for Napoli or it finishes coming apart.
Truly a mystifying season for a guy who seemed to be ready for a monster walk-year, especially in the wake of his sleep restoring surgery.

... and Bogaerts makes his bones, against Aybar who's no slouch. Great play to keep the game scoreless.
Add: Impossible strike zone tonight - wide and (down) deep. Both pitchers have benefited, but there's no offense to speak of.

Remember when Bogaerts was going to be a power hitting third baseman?

Yeah ... you've really gotta give Bogaerts credit - the kid just looks so much better in the field this season. Great play.
(Edit) And credit to everyone here that kept telling us this kid could stick at SS even when things didn't look so pretty.
Now if only they could get Miley a run or two.

Bogaerts has a legit shot to win a Gold Glove this year, his fielding has been THAT good.

Sigh. Type of loss that we can't afford at this point.

Same story, great pitching and we can't hit, either we can't hit or can't pitch on any given night. This has been a frustrating year.

Your cleanup hitter is hitting .144 / .168 / .211 versus the handedness of the opposing ptcher, and compiled a .208 / .269 / .292 line in 26 PA against today's starter back when he could actually hit those guys, and that's your complaint?
