I think Utley's slide was dirty and has no place in baseball. On the other hand, I think suspending him for a play that happened so many times all season is simply arbitrary and bad precedent. He's not being suspended for his slide, he's being suspended for Tejada's injury. It's very Goodell-esque.
Don't blame Utley, change the rule (or at least clarify it), then enforce it.

I imagine they intend to with the word coming from Torre that all players in the AFL are being instructed to slide directly to bases "and stuff" espn.go.com/blog/newyork/mets/post/_/id/111882/joe-torre-offers-mlb-viewpoint-on-chase-utleys-little-late-slide' No idea if that is something that was discussed and implemented before this play or what, but it would be pretty sweet addition to the game; hard slides into second are really obnoxious since they are clearly only meant to obstruct fielders, otherwise you would slide directly to a bag since it is quicker.

And if then they'll get really good and they'll win a pickup truck that has technology and stuff.

I hereby move that today's holiday is evermore known as Carlos Correa Day.
---- EDIT: Jinxed him, apparently.
That was a ridiculous hop though.

What I don't understand is where did he slide? He was two feet from the bag on the outside of the bag when he attempted his hit on Tejada ... nowhere did he slide at the bag he through his feet to the outside to attack and never touched the bag. He also was watching the play (in the video) ahead of him and never attempted to slide at and/or touch the bag. So how is that inside the rules?

It's within the way the rules have been enforced. Every so often you see interference called on a double play ball, but usually it is when a player slides very wide of the base at the pivoting fielder, rather than one of those where they go hard way past the bag like Utley did. The play is dangerous and has already been dangerous, and Selig/Manfred/MLB didn't do anything about it until a player was badly injured in a very prominent game on a play that proved to be eventually decisive. You can't enforce a rule post hoc like that. Torre or Manfred holding a presser and saying something like "we thought Utley's dive was not only dangerous but also interference according to the existing rules. With the safety of the players and the spirit of competition in mind, we have discussed with the umpire's union and contacted each team to let them know that this will be sure to get enforced, going forward immediately" is what should be happening. Instead, Utley is being made scapegoat for the league being behind the ball on a safety issue and it coming out in a big way. Utley was doing what he and too many other players have been doing for a long time. If the umpires had decided to rule it interference in the moment, good for them. Butthe suspension after the fact really bothers me. Though I agree with you in that probably shouldn't use the word slide, because it wasn't. It was a dive or tumble or something. There was no slide involved.

For karma's sake I hope his suspension is upheld.
For due processes sake, it should probably be overturned.

What am I missing here? The Jays let David Price pitch in a blowout game yesterday, rather than let him start the deciding Game 5? Maybe they have that much faith in Stroman, doesn't make sense to me unless I'm missing something obvious...
Its definitely an exciting time in the playoffs:
- Dodgers down 2-1 but have Kershaw in Greinke lined up for Games 4 and 5 respectively.
- Two late season acquisitions, Hamels and Cueto, pitching in deciding Game 5s.
- Cubs on the brink of beating their division rival Cardinals

There have now been 120 post-season 5 games series. The Rangers / Royals is only the fifth where the road team won the first four games. Which is, by the way, precisely what you'd expect given that the road team wins 45% of the time. (.454 * * 120) = 4.9.)
Two of these were 2-2-1 series home-road like this one; * were 2-3.
* 1981 ALDS: Yankees beat the Brewers at home after going up 2-0 on the road, then losing twice at home. 2001 ALDS: Yankees won game 5 at home versus the A's, winning 3 straight after going down 0-2. 2010 ALDS: Texas beat Tampa on the road. * 2012 NLDS: Giants won three straight on the road after losing the first two at home to the Reds.
So the only 2-2-1 series where the road team won every game was won by the Rangers.

Poor Lackey. He is too old to pitch well on 3 days' rest.

Remember when we all debating whether Piscotty was enough for Lester or Lackey last summer? Well he was.

Got a good buddy who's from Chicago, a guy who runs the wildlife project we both started working for years back. Like so many long suffering Cubs fans, he's a happy guy.

They're right to have faith in Stroman as a starter (the guy is very, very good), but it's pretty unbelievable that they would waste Price in such a situation.

Two left handed bats in Schwarber and Rizzo and two right handed bats in Bryant and Soler. All of them, plus Castro, Russell and Baez, under team control for at least the next five seasons. Once he gets Arrieta extended, Theo's on auto pilot.
