Does anybody see fister getting a qo?
Given he is a former tiger, that might intrigue dombrowski a bit.

Does anybody see fister getting a qo? Given he is a former tiger, that might intrigue dombrowski a bit. He'd be an idiot to not take it if he got one. There's no way he'd get more than that in total on a multi year deal. I have no interest if he doesn't get a QO and even less if he did and refused.

Early QO reports coming in. No surprises on Heyward, Lackey, Fowler, Samardzija, Murphy. Marco Estrada a slight surprise.

Not a lot of mention regarding Fowler on these posts. Didn't know he was going to earn a QO......I guess there will still not be any discussion on him going forward.

Gordon was announced yesterday. Dodgers offer to Greinke, Kendrick, Anderson. Orioles offered to Wieters, Chen, Davis. Astros to Rasmus. Heyman reporting Iwakuma, and also reporting Pads will offer to Kennedy. Angels announced they won't offer any, and had reportedly been considering one to Freese.
I'll keep updating on the list below:
4:44: Added Iwakuma 5:05: Nats QO Zimmermann and Desmond, not Span or Fister. 5:40: Upton, Kennedy, Gallardo

He's only been worth a QO in terms of $/WAR in one season of his career. I can't imagine any team wanting to give up a pick for him, unless they already gave one up for someone else.

So it looks like the final count is 20, per MLBTR.
Matt Wieters, C (Orioles) Chris Davis, 1B (Orioles) Howie Kendrick, 2B (Dodgers) Daniel Murphy, 2B/3B (Mets) Ian Desmond, SS (Nationals) Dexter Fowler, OF (Cubs) Alex Gordon, OF (Royals) Jason Heyward, OF (Cardinals) Colby Rasmus, OF (Astros) Justin Upton, OF (Padres)
Brett Anderson, SP (Dodgers) Wei-Yin Chen, SP (Orioles) Marco Estrada, SP (Blue Jays) Yovani Gallardo, SP (Rangers) Zack Greinke, SP (Dodgers) Hisashi Iwakuma, SP (Mariners) Ian Kennedy, SP (Padres) John Lackey, SP (Cardinals) Jeff Samardzija, SP (White Sox) Jordan Zimmermann, SP (Nationals)
Probably the only borderline guy who didn't get one is Span, which doesn't affect the Sox at all. Maybe Fister not getting one and Estrada getting one.

Common sense if the Dodgers gave into Boras request to have an opt-out why would he agree to let his client be given a QO? Isn't this an oxymoron?

I really hate the thought of giving up he 12th pick on anyone besides Grinkie, Heyward or maybe Gordon. It would be a good year to have a protected pick (or sign two) bc when the music stops I think there will be some decent deals out there on Lackey types.

The QO system sucks. There's no way to sugarcoat it. It sucks that a guy like Jordan Zimmermann, a good but non-elite pitcher who probably will only get one crack at free agency in his prime, gets devalued by getting attached to a draft pick. It sucks that getting a protected pick is tied to the totally arbitrary Top 10 picks, rather than the sensible playoff/non-playoff cutoff. It sucks that the compensation system actually incentivizes signing multiple protected free agents, because the first one you sign costs you a first-round pick, but the fourth one costs only a fourth-round pick. Just an all-around awful system. You'd think Roger Goodell came up with it.

This is the record; I believe last year's total (13?) was previous high.

This is the record; I believe last year's total (13?) was previous high. Mlb network staffers betting someone will acceptt the QO, which has never been done, but its never been at $16M and never with so many marginal players who may need to rebuild value (Weiters) or might not get that big a payday. Interesting comment tbat a couple of those would renegotiate the 1/16M to 2/24M or somethimg similar.

Clearly he doesn't have that choice now. But I believe the poster meant that when Boras was negotiating with the Dodgers, why didn't he have the No QO clause included a la Cespedes?

He doesn't have that choice. Clearly he doesn't have that choice now. But I believe the poster meant that when Boras was negotiating with the Dodgers, why didn't he have the No QO clause included a la Cespedes? Generally, such clauses are prohibited by the CBA. Cespedes' agents found a clever workaround (his contract requires his team to release him immediately before he hits FA, which means his team cannot extent him a QO or re-sign him), but that contract structure is typically found only in veteran international free agents (who want the team to release the player rather than potentially subjecting him to the six+ year minimum contract/arbitration regime).

Cespedes is a weird situation, becuause he's not technically a free agent, at least not one based on service time. He only has four years of service time following the initial contract he signed coming out of Cuba, and you need six to become a free agent. So in order to ensure he wouldn't just be offered arbitration after those four seasons, his agent got a clause put in his contract that he would be non-tendered. A non-tendered player becomes a free agent and is not eligible for a qualifying offer.

Furthermore, Cespedes had his agent add a clause to his existing contract to eliminate the prohibition against re-signing him. This was done in order to allow the Mets to compete for his services along with everyone else.

Rasmus, Wieters, Anderson accept the QO, and Estrada re-signs at 2/26. Leaves the following:
Chris Davis, 1B (Orioles) Howie Kendrick, 2B (Dodgers) Daniel Murphy, 2B/3B (Mets) Ian Desmond, SS (Nationals) Dexter Fowler, OF (Cubs) Alex Gordon, OF (Royals) Jason Heyward, OF (Cardinals) Justin Upton, OF (Padres)

I think Desmond should considering accepting the QO. He had a really rough year, and if he gambles on himself to bounce back, then he could be in for a big pay day (5yr/100M+). And the offer is enough that he could live off of it for quite a while if his performance fell-off entirely.

My bad for being unclear.
