@bradfo 29s29 seconds ago Red Sox have come to terms on a minor league deal with OF Ryan LaMarre. Played 21 games with Cincy last year I'm struck by the number of interesting non-tenders this year. In no particular order: Relievers: Aaron Crow, Juan Nicasio, Craig Stammen, Yusmeiro Petit, Al Albuquerque, Jack Leathersich, Cesar Ramos, Neftali Feliz OF for AAA depth: James Jones, David Lough, Ryan LaMarreDepth starters?: Jacob Turner, Yohan Flande Also, Greg Holland was non-tendered. He's out for the year. forum.soxprospects.com/post/180166/threadBOOM! But seriously, he makes a lot of sense. They had the weird situation of almost desperately needing a good defensive CF for Pawtucket and not at all needing him to be a depth option for the MLB club given that they basically have four guys who can play CF in the majors already. LaMarre fits that bill. m.mlb.com/news/article/41926660/reds-prospect-ryan-lamarre-sharpens-defense-during-bp

Yeah based on having Allen Craig and Bryce Brentz at the corners in AAA, they needed someone with defensive chops.

I hadn't before December 3. Just was keeping an eye on the non-tenders knowing that the Sox needed a AAA OF, admittedly at Mike's direction.
As I tweeted, Chris Marrero probably will continue to see time in the OF as well, and Coyle was starting to get a little time out there when he got hurt last year. They might bring one more guy in to compete for a spot as well, as the AAA/AA outfield is still pretty thin - the Portland outfiled, post-Kimbrel trade, is going to be something like Heller, Sturgeon, Ramos, Allday, Kapstein. Tavarez fits into one of those levels somehow as well. Maybe Cerse too.

FWIW, Steamer thinks he would put up -0.6 WAR if he got 600 PA in the majors next year...

No, but neither can anyone else on the Red Sox... There's a terrifyingly good argument that Travis Shaw is the best defensive third baseman in the Red Sox organization. (Considerable credit to Shaw, though, considering how far he's come even to be solid in such a short time). Anyhow, yeah. LaMarre is a good depth signing at a position where the need is strictly Triple-A starting center fielder. Both of the MLB corner outfielders can play center at least well enough - one much better than that - and the fourth outfielder can do it too in a pinch.

I wouldn't be uncomfortable with Holt out there either. Certainly a better option than LaMarre. But I agree there's never enough CF depth.

Holt makes a lot of plays, but he's stretched out there. He cost the team runs last year, with missed swipe tags, and balls that handcuffed him. He can look very good one play, and mediocre other times. My own opinion, from a very limited look at Travis is that he's superior to Holt at the position. That's not saying very much at all. For what it's worth, I think Marrero's better than all of them, including Sandoval.

Everywhere else he's average to above average.
