Awful. More than a century ago, Tessie was the Red Sox Royal Rooters World Series theme song. Tessie deserves better than this mini-monster. Where is the gravitas, the sense of history? This overly cutesie Tessie is neither fun nor funny nor worthy of the name. Can't blame LL or the Dentist for this faux Tessie faux pas.

At least they put her in a cheerleader outfit so girls won't get the wrong idea about their place in athletics.

For anyone bellyaching about this remember that you're a grown man/woman capable of rational thought.
It's a mascot. It's meant for children who come to the ballpark. The same with the wave. It doesn't take away anything from the name or your nostalgia or whatever other old man "I hate change" prejudices you have.
Yes it's corny and dopey. But maybe it puts a smile on a little girls face who comes to the park, in a sport where females are criminally underrepresented outside pink hats and other accessories.

I always hoped that the RS would do away with Wally, but it's clear that's not going to happen. It seems inevitable now that Wally and Tessie will procreate and in a few years we'll have a bunch of little mascots running around the Fenway lawn.

Considering one of the pics stated it was his little sister I should hope not

I seem to be the only one who watched the introductory video. Tessie fans Wally, and then hits a home run off of him and does a bat flip. And she's unafraid of an alligator that scares Wally. It's clear that she's always been the athlete in the family, and that it's been an injustice that she hasn't been at least by Wally's side. And she takes the initiative to make that happen. It's hard to indicate that a green monster is female, so putting a skirt on her in addition to giving her a girl's hairdo seems more than OK. It certainly seems that the purpose of Tessie is to encourage young girls with a role model, one that puts them equal with boys in terms of both sports participation and fandom. I think it's great.

It's still also far less than any other professional sport does in terms of mascots, cheerleaders, entertainment, etc., so it is what it is. Something I'll get slightly annoyed at when attending games, but in reality have very little impact whatsoever
Is the wave stupid, yes. Is weaving the mascot in with the TV broadcast even dumber and more annoying, of course. But it's still minimal and it's done for the other 80% of the client base, not the top 20% which I would fathom the near entirety of this board falls in to

Whoa Pokey, I have been bringing my pink hat grandaughter to games for nearly two decades. I even saved her mascot autographed pink hat (as in breast cancer prevention) for when she takes her own pink hat daughter to games. I don't object to mascots or fireworks or Caroline or even the wave, as long as it is only used in the bottom of an inning to disrupt their pitchers. Change is one of life's few constants, good or bad, so get used to it. Good change, however, is better.
I do object to calling this mascot Tessie, which is or should be a special name for Red Sox fans young and old, male and female. Nuff said.

I think stating that females are criminally underrepresented is hyperbole of the highest order. The fact is that the demographic of the baseball fan is still very male. Any business needs to sell to their key demographic, and as of yet, woman are still on the periphery. I don't have a problem with Tessie, but your trying to create an issue, when there really isn't one.

I'm saying it's good that little girls get to have fun at the ballpark. The more involved they are from a young age in the sport is great. That's a positive. I swear, grown men crybabying about mascots is just the absolute dregs of fandom.

Tessie was also a song ripped from a popular musical in the early 1900's about a woman singing to a beloved parakeet lol.
Without Dropkick, no one would even care.

I remember watching games in the 80s when I first saw the wave when I was 12. I was like "Knock that off, I'm trying to watch the game!"
When baseball caters to non-baseball fans trying to gain more fans, the diehard fans always suffer. I don't need to see ketchup/mustard races and the Wally Wave or any other crap. Baseball is plenty of entertainment. At least baseball isn't like what hockey has become with the absurdly loud music and jumbotrons telling fans what to do at every whistle.
So I might be considered grumpy old man now, but I haven't changed from when I was a kid.

Tessie was also a song ripped from a popular musical in the early 1900's about a woman singing to a beloved parakeet lol. Without Dropkick, no one would even care. With Tessie, Dropkick Murphy revived an important part of early Sox history in which fans literally were the 10th player, singing the opposition into submission and inspiring the Sox to victory ... or so the story goes. In terms of the generational, historic side of baseball, my immigrant grandfather proudly sang that song with the Royal Rooters, and my dad, uncles and aunts would sing it at parties around the good seasons of the 40's. It fell out of use, probably due to the dismal 50's and eRly 60's. That Dropkick Murphy brought it back, during another early century Red Sox championship run is a good thing. It doesn't rank up there with the saving of Fenway (a very near miss), but it is important to Sox fans. My kids and grandkids now enjoy the song and through it connect with that history (that's 5 generations of Tessie-loving Sox fans) and hopefully keep the line moving to a 6th and 7th generation. Not bad for a baseball team. It's not about mascots or pink hats, which are here to stay, at least during the good years. Tessie is a fun, lighthearted love song, but being tied to more than a century of Sox fans gives it deeper meaning. I don't know how that depth can best be expressed for future fans, but IMO it would be better done than giving the name to Wally's kid sister, who could just as easily be called Wilma or Wendy or Hermione.
