I enjoyed this read. A lot of schadenfreude for us and also a peek into how the enemy thinks: link

Man. 59 striketouts to 47 walks in those 71 innings. Plus 10 homers allowed. Looks like he was lucky to have that 5.70 ERA.

My eyes, my eyes are burning! We all could have lived nice lives without seeing that. :-) And yes, absolutely, it needed to be shared again

As is always the case with my standings, these are against a neutral schedule, and are based on actual W/L so far, plus the rest of the season projected by 90% BaseRuns (underlying stats) plus 10% actual W/L -- all of it correctly adjusted for strenghth of schedule.
Division strengths at the break:
.535 AL East .503 AL Central .501 NL West .490 NL East .489 NL Central .480 AL West
Projected final standings against a neutral schedule:
Rnk Team W 1 ChN 100.7 2 Was 99.1 3 SF 96.1 4 Cle 95.8 5 Bos 94.8 6 Tor 94.6 7 Bal 93.2 8 StL 90.9 9 LAN 90.3 10 Tex 89.2 11 Det 85.9 12 NYN 85.7 13 Mia 84.6 14 Sea 83.9 15 KC 82.8 16 Hou 82.7 17 Pit 82.3 18 ChA 80.2 19 NYA 78.9 20 Col 76.8 21 Ari 73.0 22 TB 71.8 23 Phi 70.3 24 SD 69.4 25 LAA 67.9 26 Mil 66.6 27 Oak 65.3 28 Min 62.4 29 Atl 57.6 30 Cin 55.6
Ranking by Karma or Win Efficiency, i.e., wins so far versus expected wins according to BaseRuns:
We've gone from 29th to 25th in the last few weeks or so.

The White Sox are promoting Carson Fulmer to pitch out of the bullpen. He hasn't been very good this year, and this seems like a wonderful way to both stunt his development and get his clock started far too early.

Seems like a pretty weird move. Not even short-sighted, because there' not an obvious short-term impact.

I just hope they still think the team is a contender up to and past the trade deadline. That said, I still want to sweep them this weekend....

Seems like a pretty weird move. Not even short-sighted, because there' not an obvious short-term impact. Indeed. It's a move that helps them neither in the long nor short term. In tangentially related news, remember when the Orioles did the exact same thing to Dylan Bundy in 2012, and now he's out of options despite the fact he didn't pitch in the majors from 2013 to 2015 and they completely botched his development? Which, if they hadn't called him up to pitch 1 2/3 innings in '12 he wouldn't have needed to be put only the 40-man roster until this past offseason? Bundy is getting the start for Baltimore on Sunday. EDIT: Fair warning. I'm going to re-post the above paragraph every time someone says Kopech should be in the majors this year because he throws really hard.

“@ken_Rosenthal: #Astros’ plan, per source, is to play Gurriel at 3B once he is ready, possibly in three weeks or so. Unclear what this means for Bregman.”

Sure, they might suck right now - but in only a couple years they will suck with an even higher payroll!

The Cardinals are fascinating in a trainwreck sort of way, and have a record that should make any Sox fan feel better. They have the 3rd best set of hitting and pitching stats by BaseRuns, trailing only the Cubs and Nationals (the Sox are 4th). They have translated that to:
22-8 in blowouts (5 + runs) 13-12 in 3 and 4 run games (regulation) 4-7 in 2-run games 8-17 in 1 run and extra inning games
That's a -10.3 Win Efficiency.
A lot of that is Matheny sticking with Trevor Rosenthal at closer. Randal Grichuk is the offensive clutch goat, with 2 singles, a SF, and 9 SO in his 30 highest-leverage PA.

I have no idea what is typical in this sphere, but my initial reaction is that almost four years of jail time is a pretty hefty punishment for Mr. Correa.
