Wow, Matt Murton. Never understood how that guy ended up in Japan. He hit .297/.365/.444 (granted this was in '06 when that was just a tic above average) in basically a full season as a 24 year old, and never got a shot as a starter in the bigs again. Whatever window he might have had has probably closed at 34, but it would be nice to see him get one last cup of coffee.

Yeah, I think maybe 3 years ago, I remember wanting the Sox to pick him up from Japan. I can't remember the exact year, but I remember thinking we needed a corner outfielder and thought there was some upside there.

I guess this is related somewhat. Has anyone heard if Wright's concussion symptoms went away?

MLB: Mets RHP Jenrry Mejia permanently suspended by MLB after testing positive for Boldenone, his 3rd performance-enhancing substance violation. T.J. Quinn @tjquinnespn 3m3 minutes ago Mejia tested positive for boldenone, the 2nd time he was nailed for it. It's old school, unsophisticated, easily detectable. Career suicide. T.J. Quinn @tjquinnespn 3m3 minutes ago He also tested positive previously for stanozolol, same level of sophistication. He wasn't even trying to avoid detection.

What a dummy. 3 failed tests in less than a year

That sounds more like addiction than an attempt at performance enhancement. While there should be punishment certainly (a season, or even two, pending completion of an anti-addiction program, seems totally appropriate), a lifetime ban is only going to exacerbate his problems.

Milwaukee Brewers @brewers The #Brewers have acquired two young prospects, C Jacob Nottingham and RHP Bubba Derby, from Oakland in exchange for OF Khris Davis. --
Not a bad trade for either side. Davis has terrific power, especially to RF. No pronounced platoon stat, four years of team control, and should play everyday between LF/DH. Hopefully Crisp/Butler/Canha don't relegate him to the bench too often. The Brewers get their post-Lucroy catcher, and can slide Domingo Santana out of CF, which wasn't going to work.
Edit: I still can't believe Billy Beane gave Billy Butler $30M/3. Also, to make room for Khris, the A's DFA'd Sean Nolin who came over in the Donaldson deal -- another Beane head scratcher.

Was coming in here to post the same news. Nolin a) isn't really all that great and I think is out of options, and b) is probably the 50th player DFA'd this offseason who I would give a shot in the bullpen over Edwin Escobar.

I think three strikes your out is a good rule. Hope the guy finds his way , but no way he didn't make a clear choice to cheat the game.

If you think about it, I don't think these guys have much to lose. I know every case is different. If a guys knows he can't make it in the bigs, he tries to get an edge with PED's. If he's caught, he's out anyway. If he's not, he can make millions. Or, in the case of Melky/Nelson Cruz, Pettite, & many others, if they have good enough year/years he can still get paid millions after their suspensions. If an average major leaguer as Melky Cabrera was, getting paid as an average major leaguer wasn't good enough. He went for the next tier of the pay scale, got caught & was penalized, then still cashed in.

Kinda sucks Gourriel defected so late in the offseason, and in his career too for that matter. He would outperform Sandoval for about half the money and no pick.

Gourriel is 31, not 37 or something. Consider that Hector Olivera got 6/62.5 (incl. 28M signing bonus) despite health questions on his arm. Gourriel is better and isn't even a year older (although he'll be signing a couple years later), and he's way better, presumably without the health issues.

Nothing sucks more than kids with cancer (or some other shitty disease they can't do anything about).
