Three Up, Three Down, Three Gems - 2016
|
Post by soxcentral on Jan 15, 2016 13:22:09 GMT -5
Really liked this idea, and have been thinking about it for 2016....
THREE UP Trey Ball - Sometimes the high ceiling picks are busts, sometimes they just take longer than you want to really start producing. I think he's the latter, with a long frame and the challenges that come with repeating mechanics at his size, expecting his strongest year to date for 2016.
Chandler Shepherd - Had a good 2015, but as a strike thrower I like his potential to climb the ladder as a reliever this year.
Yoan Aybar - Will make everyone forget about Margot, expecting his power bat to blossom this year.
THREE DOWN Nick Longhi - Read somewhere his swing path and bat speed combination don't have enough potential to develop as a power hitter, and without that I'm not sure what else he is.
Teddy Stankiewicz - He's been a disappointment to me thus far, and I see his average stuff getting crushed in AA.
Sam Travis - He's a better hitter than Longhi, but I think his stock is higher than his game at this point. Not saying bust, just think he isn't as close to the majors as he's been mentioned as being.
THREE HIDDEN GEMS Marc Brakeman - Expecting a big year from him, finishing in our Top 20 if he can stay healthy.
Roniel Raudes - Expecting him to mature a bit more physically and tick up velocity-wise, adding to his already impressive K totals.
Josh Ockimey - Hasn't really turned on the power yet, guessing 2016 he does and starts getting noticed.

THREE UP
1) Luis Alexander Basabe - I believe his power/speed combo will begin to play up even more, and he will be the guy that makes us forget Margot. Young and athletic...my favorite mix.
2) Pat Light - he will learn to command his splitter and become a solid valuable bullpen piece
3) Marc Brakeman - Marc will finally be healthy, productive, and wise
THREE DOWN
1) Sean Coyle - injury prone, big swing and miss, and running out of time
2) Karsten Whitson - hopefully healthy, but he better show something soon
3) Edwin Escobar - makes it this spring or heading somewhere else after a poor season
THREE GEMS
1) Lorenzo Cedrola - probably will be in GCL. Nice stats and very young. Interesting to see what we have state side.
2) Austin Glorius - already 22, but man he has a nice arm. It will be very interesting to see how he performs the whole year. He may end up in Portland by August
3) Travis Lakins - may fly through the system. Older, but finally healthy

Three UP:
Anderson Espinoza. I think he will be the top pitching prospect in baseball by mid-season.
Marco Hernandez. I think he's a better all around player than generally thought of. A strong first half could make him a valuable mid season trade chip.
Michael Kopech. I hate to pick 2 top 5 prospects here but I think the time off may serve him well and he could explode onto the scene similarly to ERod. Reports out of Fall Instrux had him with an improved change-up. He could potentially be in the 2017 rotation. (Adding since I wasn't clear, by the end of the year).
Three Down. (The guys I hope I'm way off-base about.)
Michael Chavis. To hit, you need to actually be able to put a bat on the ball. I see him following the Jason Place' trajectory.
Nick Longhi. I don't see the tools playing up in upper levels. I don't think there's enough bat for 1B or corner outfield.
Wendell Rijo. I still don't see it. The glove isn't enough to offset the bat.
Three gems:
Teddy Stankiewicz. I've always liked him more than most and see him as a potential mid rotation starter down the road.
Yoan Aybar. If anyone is likely to come out of nowhere this is the guy.
Christopher Acosta. Somewhat overshadowed by Espinoza, this could be Acosta's time to put himself onto the radar.

There's no way in hell Kopech is going to be in the 2017 rotation. That's next summer. It just ain't happening. He only pitched in single A last year and was very good, but not truly dominant. I would be a little surprised if he's in the 2018 rotation - at least before August. 2019 is most reasonable. He'll need this summer for A+, maybe some AA, 2017 for AA, maybe some AAA, 2018 for AAA and some taste of Boston, 2019 Boston. That's if all goes and on the starter track.

I should have been clearer, I meant by the end of the year which is also very fast. I think he'll be in Portland by the end of this year. He wouldn't be the first 21 year old in a rotation.
As a point of reference, I was very impressed with how well he took to the change in mechanics from the draft video (which were terrible) to this past year at Greenville where they only seem to need smoothing out. With new mechanics it always seems like the improvements take a while to develop and his BB/K ratios were particularly impressive under those situations. I strongly suspect he'll be high 90's and too advanced for lower levels very soon.

I don't know about three but I'll pick one of each:
Up
Benintendi - every time I see the combine numbers he put up between college and pro-ball last year I go WTF. Will not be surprise if he reaches the big leagues next year.
Down
Chavis - too many Ks. Still has the power and defense but I worry the hit tool will prevent him from reaching his ceiling. I know he had a reputation of a good hit tool out of HS so there is hope.
Gem
Albert Guaimaro - a bit of a forgotten man cause he didn't get the highest bonus for technical reasons. But Eddie and his crew know what they are doing I say he has a big debut and is on everyone's radar this time next year.

I too liked the idea of this thread last year and glad it was resurrected.
THREE UP
1) Michael Kopech - I cant wait to see the bounce back after what seemed to be a tough luck suspension. I hope he comes out with a chip on his shoulder and continues on the great trajectory he was on last season.
2) Sam Travis - Love to see him build off his AFL appearance, hoping for some more in game power, but if he can keep his OBP moving in the right direction (steadily increased at every level outside his 107AB stop at Greenville) including a .394 OBP over the fall season (94 AB SSS) then the lack of big power will be mitigated.
3) Benny/Yoan/Anderson - The Holy Triumvirate, couldn't help myself, all three are so exciting. THREE DOWN
1) Sean Coyle - For all the same reasons, really hope he bounces back though
2) Michael Chavis - See ball, hit ball. Really needs to improve his contact rates.
3) Bryce Brentz - Stick a fork in him sadly.
THREE GEMS
1) Ben Taylor - Complete hunch based on seeing him pitch on TV once last year, he looked like he really knew what he was doing, had a plan, and spotted his pitches well.
2) Josh Ockimey - Looking forward to see the progression with Ockimey, tantalizing power, and got on base at a decent clip (.349 OBP) last year in Lowell.
3) Travis Lakins - Nice three pitch mix, like others, cant wait to see him healthy

UP:
Sam Travis. The dude can hit, and I really doubt he's going to be challenged by AAA pitching any more than he was by AA pitching. Unless he pulls a Cecchini and just forgets how to hit, which is possible but probably not that likely, he's either going to hold steady, or show some power gains and increase his stock.
Michael Chavis. It's possible that every scout missed on the hit/power combo that he supposedly possesses, but at this point I'm more inclined to believe he simply struggled to adjust to life in pro ball last year. There were reports of him pressing, not surprising for a 19 year old who's never really been challenged before. Having been through the grinder last year, I'm hopeful he'll learn from that experience and we'll see his tools start to manifest this year.
Trey Ball. I still think there's enough there in terms of stuff and projection, he probably repeats Salem this year, and that would be as good a time as any to start putting things together consistently. Something of a make-or-break year for him, I'm betting on the make side, although I can't say I'm incredibly confident about it.
DOWN:
Andrew Benintendi. I like him, but he's SO hyped right now, mostly based on him punishing competition at a level where he should punish it given his pedigree. I know there's scouting juice there as well, but I think scouts can be fooled by performance as much as anyone. He's great, but I think he gets pushed to a level where he'll struggle a bit this year, and his projections will come back down to earth a little bit.
Nick Longhi. Basically a bat-only guy without any spectacular abilities with the bat, I feel like he's the kind of guy who you can sort of dream on when he's at the lower levels, but as he moves up and his limitations become more apparent, I think he becomes more of an afterthought.
Brian Johnson. I feel kind of bad putting him here, but mysterious arm issues for a guy who's already pretty old and already has fairly marginal stuff... it's a dangerous profile. He could be in the big league next year, but I think there's a strong chance he could go the Brandon Workman rout and just slide off into oblivion. Which probably happens more often to that type of pitcher than we like to think about.
GEMS:
I won't pretend I'm smart enough or well informed enough about the deep dark depths of the system to make great predictions here, but Williams Jerez, Pat Light, and Marco Hernandez remain relatively anonymous players despite being decent candidates to make a big league impact next year.

UP:
Anderson Espinoza. Will end the year in AA as a top 5 prospect in baseball.
Luis Alexander Basabe. Will have a breakout year in Greenville and end up as the #6 prospect behind Espinosa, Moncada, Benintendi, Devers, and Kopech.
Kevin McAvoy. Otherworldly groundball rate will play up at all levels, making him a solid bet to eventually get successful run as a solid 4th/5th starter type.
DOWN:
Michael Chavis. Hole in approach proves too much to overcome as Chavis struggles for the second straight year in Greenville. I certainly hope I'm wrong on this one.
Nick Longhi. Average tools across the board will be exposed as he moves up the ladder.
Trey Ball. Will have yet another mediocre year. Again, hope I am wrong.
GEMS:
Josh Ockimey. Showed an impressive ability against age-advanced, more college type competition. Much improved on first season. I think this is the year he puts in a lot of work in the offseason and shows increased power.
Roniel Raudes. He will show that last year was no fluke and end the year with a cup of coffee in Greenville ala Espinosa last year.
Kevin Steen. Call me crazy but I see Steen following in Mookie's footsteps as a young, two-sport high schooler out of Tennessee. I think his velocity will tick up as his muscle mass and athleticism increase with age.
My picks last year were just okay (UP: Dubon, Margot, Longhi; DOWN: Light, Mercedes, Callahan; GEMS: Ramos, Wright, McAvoy). Curious to see how this group works out.

UP:
Sam Travis. I'm a believer in his bat. I think he'll be UP enough that the Sox will seriously look to get him the 1b job for 2017 with Hanley shifting over to DH.
Michael Chavis. I know he whiffs a ton, but he was improving as the season was progressing, so I'm not sold on the thought that his season last year represents what he will be going forward. Players improve and players decline. I don't think Chavis' stats represent who he'll be. I think the power will continue to intrigue and the Ks will go down and his stock will go upward.
Luis Alexander Basabe. I think he has a good year for his age and establishes himself as another reason why Manny Margot was expendable. I like his ability to draw walks and hit with some power.
DOWN:
Marco Hernandez. I don't think he's that good a hitter and with his OBP depending upon his BA, it means he'll be a AAA guy, rather than a potential bench guy in the majors.
Pat Light. I like Pat Light's potential but if he can't throw strikes it won't matter. I don't think Light is somebody to give up on. I do think he'll struggle this year, though.
Wendell Rijo. I don't think he'll rebound. I think he's already peaked as a prospect.
GEMS:
Roniel Raudes. Am interested to see what he can do. Have heard good things about him.
Josh Ockimey. I like his power potential. I think we see some of it this year.
Travis Lakins. I like to think that guy at Fangraphs knows what he's talking about.

UP- TREY BALL- Been positive, a bit less so last year, all along. You can't teach the size, projectability and smooth actions..still young but crossroads year
YOAN MONCADA- What he did in his adjustment year, epecially late was incredible. With his tools he now soars
LUIS BASABE- Very young and athletic, now he too takes off
Down- Nick Longhi- Lacking any outstanding tools for production type positions
Teddy Stankiewicz- Lacks outstanding or consistent stuff, don't like hits ratios, he can be had at upper levels
Bryce Brenz- Older righties lacking hit tools don't fare well at the highest level
Gems- Chris Acosta- Very overlooked. Great scouting and stuff for his age, showed well toward the end Rondel Raudes- Very impressive stuff at a young age, again Yoan Aybar- Very young and athletic and lots of projection in that build as he adds muscle

My 3 gems requires patience but will pan out, Steen, Ockimey,Pennington. 3 up, Kopech, Ball, Buttrey. 3 down, Chavis,Marrero, Matheny. I feel with Buttrey he is gonna be one of those kids that rebounds but we don't believe in him so trade high on him. We need those types also. I stress patience with the gems. Pennington looks like he is earmarked for pen but if something goes right we might have another starter. Ockimey to me is bash, bash, bash. I not giving up on Ball he is gonna figure this out. The three I am down on is easy. Marrero was to me the highest rated pick still available and we fell for it. I hated the right up on Matheny and we didn't need the pick to me. Finally I haven't seen it from Chavis and he should be doing good because the other kids are getting the attention. This year is the key.
Also I disappointed they released Jalen Williams. They had a purge in December I didn't see until now. I like this by the way.

I too enjoyed this last year.
Three Up
Yoan Moncada - He's going to really go off this season more than he already has in the minors, I fully expect him to be in Pawtucket by the end of August.
Michael Kopech - I believe his suspension is just going to fuel him. I expect him to have a tremendous season and I'm very excited to watch his starts this year. Could be a full time member of the rotation by 2018.
Mauricio Dubon - I feel as though Dubon was a little overlooked since he played the same position as Guerra, but I love his athleticism and ability to play so many positions. I think he'll do well in Salem, and could be in Portland replacing Lin by the end of 2016.
Three Down
Ty Buttrey - I don't think he's going to handle AA very well. I don't think he's going to come close to ceiling, but I hope I'm wrong.
Sean Coyle - It's been said previously in this thread, but I don't think Coyle is going to stay healthy enough to have a MLB Career.
Williams Jerez - I'm rooting for the guy, as I love positions players that switch to pitching, but I think he's going to suffer control problems this year.
Three Gems
Austin Rei - I know he struggled mightily last season, but he has one full off-season to collect himself and show everyone why he was a third round pick. I think his offense and defense will greatly improve and he'll be someone we'll discuss a lot more this time next year.
Simon Muzziotti - Pedroelgrande mentioned Guaimaro and got me thinking about Muzziotti who was also signed by Eddie. Baseball America claims he's got easy plus speed and a knack for hitting, so I'm going to include him here.
Luis Ysla - A move full time to the bullpen will be exactly what Ysla needs. I think his plus fastball is going to propel him to AAA/MLB shuttle rides by August / September.
