Buttrey struck out Dahl with a 95 mph fastball If he ever learns to throw strikes, he has decent enough stuff. He's a long way from that though.

Crap. Ramos replaced. Said to be seen limping to the dugout. and the leg woes continue Another decent prospect that has problems staying on the field. The tools are there. Thru 4, Musgrave 43 pitches 35 strikes 0BB 0K. Buttrey 59 pitches 38 strikes 2BB 5K. When Ty throws strikes he generates a lot of swings and misses. Gameday isn't showing Vinicio ejected and replaced by Rijo a few innings ago. Portland's infield defense is pretty decent in spite of Weems being new to 1B.

I'm starting to get concerned with Travis contact numbers. Is he swinging for the fences?

Benny Baseball on the other hand is just cruising through the Carolina League: facing a LHP, he walked and hit a double.

Is Danny Mars ever going to get some love? I get the age issue and the severe lack of pop but he has generally hit well and seems to be a decent defender with some speed. Doesn't strike out much and is consistent. Sometimes guys grow into some power and learn to drive the ball well. He needs to start getting more love.

Shoulda started Benny in Portland. I honestly think that weather is the biggest factor when deciding whether to start players in Portland.

The other Portland candidate, Moncada, just doubled and came home on a Doubon single (who's also doing well).
Salem up 3-2 bottom 10th
Game over. Benintendi thrown out for arguing what I think was a checked swing.
Benintendi was also caught stealing (pickoffs) twice tonight. Guzman and Devers (foul, no error) both muffed easy popups.
In the Drive game, the good Basabe continues to roll, he's back at ss and the bad Basabe continues to struggle. Washington and Baldwin with HRs. Baldwin was removed later for a pinch runner, not sure what's up there, MiLB.TV is supposed to be broadcasting it but a link doesn't show up.

Did Benintendi just get tossed? Ya terrible call on a check swing, was watching on milb.com and saw him barking back to the first base umpire who made the call; so bad in fact the winston salem tv announcers agreed he had a real point as they went to break. Love the fire personally!!!

I agree with the idea that there's value to 'doesn't strike out much and is consistent'. I've always suspected that Z-contact is the hitting skill that translates best as you go up the ladder. I'm just not sold you can use that description for Mars, whose career MILB strikeout rate is 20.9% despite having not been exposed to high A until this year, and who has put up pretty pedestrian on-base numbers. Obviously there's the scouting angle - maybe he has great bat-to-ball skills that I'm not accounting for by looking at his career page. But the numbers don't match your description imo. I think Dubon - who is 21 at the same level, who has a track record of high BABIPs (~.340 in Lowell, Greenville, AND Salem) and whose K%/BB% is impressive and trending very positively, is the best candidate for "off the radar contact hitter who will just keep hitting".

Drive won 5-3. Kemp added a HR.
Time to promote Poyner ? 23 year old college reliever who's the Drive closer. Throws strikes. I didn't see him today but he's looked good when I did see him. Looks like he's an over match for the SAL.

To follow up on the discussion of sneaky-good contact hitters - Brock Holt has made a career out of "unreasonable" BABIP numbers. .317 Pirates (A-) .402 Pirates (A+) .340 Pirates (AA) .465 Pirates (AAA) .365 Pirates (MLB) .314 Red Sox (AAA) .349 Red Sox (MLB, 2014) .350 Red Sox (MLB, 2015) If you look at his MLB spray charts... (1) he hits a ridiculous number of line drives (2) his flies rarely have much hang time and often are to the shallow part of the outfield In other words he has a profile that just gets on base. In a sense, his lack of power helps him - it ensures that the balls he lifts fall in shallow RF rather than being driven into the zone where the RF can snag them. When Dubon gets to a level where we can better monitor his batted-ball profile, we'll have a better idea without watching the MILB games of whether or not he just gets on base.

Shoulda started Benny in Portland. Ramos came out of the SeaDog game limping. Not the way I'd want it to happen but...

A couple of nice starts from Ben Taylor in High-A. Not much love around here, but I remember seeing his name pop up a couple times in the relative depth of prospect lists....

What other than his numbers in a nine-game sample this season do you find impressive? .283/.335/.331 as a 21-year-old in the Sally last year doesn't quite jump off the page to me. He's probably lurking just outside of the Top 60 and I think that's fair for what we've seen from him so far. A couple of nice starts from Ben Taylor in High-A. Not much love around here, but I remember seeing his name pop up a couple times in the relative depth of prospect lists.... He's ranked #43 on the site right now. Could certainly rise a bit if he continues to succeed in Salem. Ian for one liked what he saw from him in both Lowell and Greenville last year.
