Seems our biggest need is a fifth starter.
Nelson is a sinkerball pitcher, might work for us. Dombrowski should be able to pick him up using secondary trade chips.

Not that I think it's necessarily a bad idea, but where do you put him, and what do you do with whoever he displaces? Are you talking about trading Buchholz? FWIW, his K rate is below league average, and DD isn't big on sinkerballers. But, given the infield, and Vazquez framing low, he could have value to them. I'd still rather see them go after a big arm whose stock is down a bit (think Taijuan Walker or Kevin Gausman at this time last year).

I think with porcello and price we have two starters we can trust.
Wright is probably a third.
Then we have Buchholz who is not executing the sinking fastball, but the sox are keeping him in the rotation, so he is 4 by default. However a dl candidate should anyone listed below step up.
Kelly and Rodriguez if healthy, are unknowns. Neither is really throwing well thus far in rehab, but Kelly might be putting it together. More starts are needed by both before we know what we have with them.
Owens, Johnson, Elias and Sullivan are not ready.
So in my mind, we will need a fifth starter in about two weeks or so.
I think trading from our stash of secondary prospects, makes the most sense.
Finding the guy to trade for that can help us, but only cost secondary prospects is the hard part.

I don't see them giving him up for secondary prospects since he's can't become a FA until after 2020. If you take away the big five (including Swihart) the conversion probably starts with both Travis and Kopech then expands.
I thought about him as a trade candidate with Braun and would start a package around Swihart. I'm really racking my brain wondering which starters will be available come July but don't see a ton. Hopefully Buch bounces back and E Rod gives us a boost.

Looked at the FA list for 2017 or 2018 (non contending teams) & the cupboard is pretty bare. Aside from a Rich Hill or Jeremy Hellickson type there's not much out there. I noticed Jake Arrieta & Jason Hammel become free agents after next year. With Lackey probably done as well, the Cubbies best window of opportunity is this year & next. Arrieta is a Boras guy, so you know he's not doing an extension.

I agree re: the upcoming FA class, but Arrieta's not guaranteed to go FA either. Plus, he'll be 32 (although without the usual wear and tear on his arm).

True about Strasburg, but he will get a second bite of the apple in his mid-30's. This will be Arrieta's last deal so the Cubs would have to dig deep to lock him up....It's amazing that just a few years ago Arrieta & Hammel were BOTH on the Orioles staff.

Good point about Arrieta trying to maximize his earnings. Strasburg also has an injury history that probably figured into his thinking. Interesting article about Nelson, has me liking his acquisition a bit more: www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-constantly-evolving-jimmy-nelson/

It's a contract to set him up for another massive contract, while at the same time getting his player 175 million if he blows out his elbow.
