As we approach the 2016 MLB draft, I wanted to take a look back and see how a past draft class dramatically impacted the fortunes of two AL East rivals.
I know all Sox fans are grateful for the bounty that is/was the 2011 draft. We already have > 18 WAR generated by that draft class, primarily from Betts, Bradley and Shaw. Really points up to the great job Amiel Sawdaye did with those picks and how they have developed.
Compare this to the draft the Rays had that same year. They owned 12 of the first 89 picks. I remember thinking at that time that Tampa could set themselves up for YEARS with that draft class. To date, the net result of that entire Tampa draft class is 1.0 WAR, from Mikie Mahtook. (WAR #'s for Sox and Rays taken from B Ref.)
In retrospect, it was the Red Sox that set themselves up for years to come with that class. And, it reinforces how fortunate we are as fans to have been the beneficiaries of that draft. Thanks, Amiel.

Granted, it may not be a completely fair comparison...we'd have to compare the signing bonuses. But can you imagine if we swapped players and the Rays had Mookie, JBJ, Swihart, Barnes, Shaw et al?

If someone had that info on Tampa's total draft bonus amount for 2011 draft that would be great. Spent a few minutes and I can't easily find it, only Article saying it may cost up to 10 million to sign that class. The Red Sox spent almost 11 million on the 2011 draft class.

That's insane. That's a lot of picks to bomb out on.

That's insane. That's a lot of picks to bomb out on. I recall there was even a lot of headscratching at the time too, so this seems to be an amateur scouting failure rather than player dev.

Seems like bad scouting and them being cheap. Lot of at slot or below slot signs in that draft for Rays, compared to Sox going over slot for all but one of picks in first 10 rounds.
