I think if he is pitching well come Sept. they should try to get something done with him before the season ends.

demote him to the minors so he doesn't get the requisite service time and is stuck with us another year!!! JK... plus, I think they're past this point. I think you either sign him now, or try to grab him after the season. Shouldn't be very expensive, but might require a long-term contract.

I'm sure he could get the normal 7th inning reliever payday & I'm sure we could retain him via FA. A long as he wants to stay in Boston. It may or may not affect him if Koji leaves. I think he's always had a Japanese partner in the bullpen with Okajima, then Koji. Obviously not every teams has one. Bottom line is if he likes it in Boston, he'll probably be back.

My only concern is that he gets bigger offers than the Sox presume. That happened with Andrew Miller (whose career the Sox saved), and look how that worked out. I say sign him now to a 3- or 4- year deal as reasonably as possible. Otherwise, they risk him getting O'Day dollars/years from someone whose bullpen is bad enough that they need to overspend.

The poll should have had an option for "Try to re-sign him during the exclusivity period" as opposed to "Let him go to free agency," which are very different. IOW, offer him an extension before he's a FA, but wait as long as possible to determine how good he projects to be and what the team's needs are.

Honestly can't decide whether I think Tazawa will age well. On one hand, he's not totally dependent on velocity and already has pretty good command, and he's got a good enough secondary pitch that he might age as gracefully as Uehara. On the other hand, we've already seen him go through prolonged stretches where he can't get swings-and-misses and gets crushed, and he's a guy who struggles if he's overused.
Generally, I'm not a fan of signing relievers to long market-rate deals, so I probably let him walk in the end. He's close enough to free agency that I don't see him taking a meaningful discount to re-sign with Boston before he tests the market.

I wonder if he still has an itch to start. That could make the decision for us.
