I feel that one of the three needs our 2016 team has (besides a reliable middle/setup reliever and an average/above average starter) is a Left Fielder, preferrably one that's left handed or with limited splits. I'd think that Beintendi would be our long term solution, but I don't see him cracking the majors until maybe late 2017. That being said, we may only need a player for the rest of this season, or one that is also on the books for next season. In the interim, I think that with Swihart now injured, Craig useless, Young somewhat undesirable vs. righties or playing defense, and Castillo in the minors, I think that we have somewhat of a black hole at both LF and C when a righty is pitching.
I decided to look at teams that were below .500. Right now, these are the Yankees, Rays, Twins, Astros, Angels, A's, Phillies, Braves, Brewers, Reds, Rockies, Dbacks, and Padres. Not all of them may be sellers at the deadline, but it's a good start. Then I decided to look at the outfielders that made a decent amount of money, especially relative to their teammates. This may help indicate players that a team may be more interested in moving. Then I decided to look at their 2016 splits vs. RHP. Normally I looked at just left handed batters, but there are some right handed OF's that can still hit RHP. That may be useful as it can lead to Betts or Bradley getting a day of rest now and then.
Note: By listing a player here, that does not mean that I am interested in acquiring them. I just want to open the discussion regarding plausible trade targets and desired acquisition costs.

Outfield help has to be the bottom of the list after watching the SP this weekend.
Solution in LF, BBrentz. He deserves a chance.

His BABIP in Pawtucket is very high. I doubt he'd be that much better against righties than Young would be. The Sox need to get a platoon lefty for LF.

I understand (and I thought about creating a similar thread for decent starters, which I may end up doing later), but just because it's not the most important way that we can improve, doesn't mean that we can't improve that way. Getting a LF and getting a SP are not mutually exclusive. We have the resources to plug many holes, and each of the options has its own cost. I cannot speak for any of the opposing GM's regarding what they would want from us for each of the above pieces. If we can improve the team by scoring more runs or allowing fewer runs (also note that better defense can lead to run prevention as well as better pitching) then we should leave no stone unturned.

I also have a guilty obsession with Ichiro. I really want Miami to sell and for us to take a flyer. Him getting 3,000 hits is one thing, but I can only imagine what he will add to the clubhouse dynamic.

I was thinking Rasmus, mainly because the Astros would likely give him up for salary relief, he’s on a 1 year deal, and it wouldn’t cost valuable trading chips that we will need to acquire pitching. Rasmus hits for power against RHP, and could help in some sort of platoon with Young, Young would play against all LHP, and Rasmus and Young could have some kind of split against RHP.

Those who think the outfield is fine, think about losing Mookie or JBJ to a DL stint and what that would look like.

I think Ichiro is a guy who'll hit .280 but with an OBP and a SA not that much higher, so I wonder why I would be interested, but I kind of am. Doesn't make too much sense. I think he won't go until Miami has milked that 3000th hit out of him.

There is a LH outfielder available immediately, and it may not cost a lot to acquire him. Used to play in Boston.
Seriously, any acquisition should be made keeping Benintendi in mind as he could very well be the 2017 regular.

Reddick fractured his thumb two weeks ago. Now that Houston has heated up Rasmus could be less likely.

Charlie Blackman is a good name if he doesn't cost that much to acquire. I don't think that'll be the case though. Good hard nosed player. Bad Cf, perfect LF.
But most likely Josh Reddick. Josh could also spend time in Rf and give Mookie and JBJ days off too.
I would be interested in Carlos Gonzalez if the Rockies took back Castillo or Allen Craig in return (to off set the money).
I would be willing to send Henry Owens to the Rockies for either Gonzalez (if the Rockies took back Castillo or Craig) or for Blackman.
I wouldn't give up much to the A's but salary relief and a low level prospect for Reddick.

I would offer to take Ellsbury from the Yankees if they pick up $30M in his salary. In exchange, I would offer to take Ellsbury from the Yankees if they pick up $30M in salary.
Or they could have Bryce Brentz.
Ellsbury would be a great platoonmate with Young and could spell JBJ on the odd game.

Not sure about that one.

I'll be very interested in someone line Brandon Moss: Cheap, Half a season rental, can play 1st base (Hanley will hit the DL sooner or later even if he stops sucking). Considering that he's a rental, he may not cost that much: Someone like Dubon seemslike a fair price to me.

He or Reddick (when healthy), maybe Jay Bruce, are the best options, provided the prospect cost is low.

Then I wonder how much it would cost to get back those players from the Athletics at a later date

Reddick and Cargo are in different situations as Cargo is due another $20 mil next year. Not peanuts. He may or may not be cheaper due to this, but at least there are options. Hill could give us some good starts until he hits that wall. We really shouldn't need him for the playoffs, just need him to get us some valuable wins now to try avoid a WC game.

If Houston falls out of it, and given how they are built, anyone think they'd move Springer for a prospect rich package (i.e. Moncada and Benintendi)?

I think Houston's past the teardown stage-- they're close enough to contention that there's no incentive to trade their young, cheap stars.

I want no part of getting a LF that would cost us Moncada and/or Benintendi, unless his name is Trout. We can use an upgrade and more depth, but we should be able to do that by not including our top prospects.

Benintendi is likely the LF next year, so seems a bit dumb to trade him for a LF.
