Oh my god, did we just get sentenced to another 5 years of Farrell?

Since we're criticizing Groome for something he hasn't done yet, can I bash him for giving up a critical home run to Manny Machado in 5 years? Or should I just bash Farrell for leaving him in too long? The location will have been bad, but it should have been Pat Light's job to get him out anyway. In fairness to Farrell, his numbers against Machado were excellent, plus Tazawa wasn’t available to JF because his arm fell off 2 years ago from overuse!

If Groome doesn't sign there is no one to blame but the Red Sox and you can already tell the Groome bashing is going to be pathetic everywhere on the internet.

He was homesick in Fla @ IMG & had to move back home. Imagine if he gets signed next year by a west coast team. At least in Boston, he is in the northeast. Even their A+ AA AAA teams are not that far from NJ.

At least there's such a small population that cares about the draft that it'll die down fast. The good news is it looks like we're not even going to have to face that.

Well you could say the same about Karsten Whitson in 2010 or even Mark Appel in 2012. While Mark Appel did improve his draft stock, the Pirates seem to have do ok as they took Austin Meadows with the compensation pick. I guess my point, is that, with this system, the team does not have a ton of downside if they fail to sign a player. Meanwhile the player takes a huge risk which may or may not payoff.

Seriously, though, this is clearly going to happen, probably tomorrow. Then they'll wrap up whatever they can do with Dalbec, Shawaryn (Fear the Turtle!), Quintana, on Friday.

See, there's your problem right there Not to mention the two asshats, whose show he reported that on. Tried to dig into this a little bit more and found a chat from Keith Law from last month that does indeed refute what "Red Light" said this morning. Link with related excerpt below- meadowparty.com/blog/2016/06/10/klawchat-61016/"mike: can you explain the reason what the catch-all term “character concerns” is so often used (e.g. Groome) and what those concerns are are not actually reported by anyone? Is it respect for kid’s privacy or something else Klaw: Because lawyers. I know what’s up with Groome – I did some background work of my own to check on some of the rumors (nearly all of which turned out to be false … for example, he was not kicked out of IMG). But I can’t say exactly what I know because ESPN has editorial standards for reporting and I abide by those."

Curt Schilling is doing a world rock throwing tour, going from glass house to glass house across the globe.

In fairness to Schilling, he did say that the only stuff he had heard were rumors and that he wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be false. So lets stop playing a game of telephone and make matters even worse....

Who would of thought a few months ago, that we would be drafting AND signing Groome. Character issues with Groome appears to be bringing us a potential stud starter.

I wonder if Shawaryn could possibly price himself out of the Red Sox plans? If he is demanding over slot $ then he is using funds possibly needed to sign Groome.

The question is whether he is asking > slot or > slot + 5%, If the second, I would pass unless Groome was not going to sign. If the first, we could offer slot + 1-2%, making another 7-10K available for Groome

If he's asking for more than 5% of slot you mine as well offer him slot and move on. If he turns it down you lose the 5% overage from his bonus slot but you wouldn't have that money anyways if you had to pay him 5% or more. \
I mean hypothetically you could save an additional 5 or 10K if he would except 2-3% over slot but I'm fairly certain if he'd sign for 390K he'd sign for 375.
I'm talking about Shawaryn, I suppose I should have put this in the draft thread.....my bad.

I wasn't aware that at any point I called him, personally, dumb. In fact, I don't think I said at any point that not signing was dumb. What I did say was that in his particular case, it's unlikely that he stands to make significantly more money by waiting. He doesn't have a 4-year college commitment, so he's not in the same boat as "any HS kid who gets drafted." He's also been drafted high in the first round, which also can't be said of any HS kid who gets drafted. I'm not sure if you're replying to my comment specifically, but if you are you're addressing a completely different issue. Groome is a special case, and in his special case the downside risk, financially, is greater than the upside risk. He's got to make his own choices as to what's important to him, and if he wants to gamble on the chance that he gets a bigger bonus next year, that's his prerogative. But it's my opinion that IF he is quibbling over a relatively small percentage of his bonus, it's probabilistically not in his favor, if money is his major concern. What you're paraphrasing me as saying isn't remotely close to what I actually said. How is his downside risk greater than the upside risk? Basically, the top 4 picks get more than 4m bonuses. Number 1 may get $8m, then #2 $7m, then 3 $6m then $5m. It's kind of insane to say this kid will definitely be the number 1 or 2 pick next year even if you can guarantee health. But you can't guarantee health. Then you need to factor in a lot of other things. For example, what if he ends up in San Diego vs Boston and he's as good as he could be. Don't you think he makes up the draft bonus difference and then some with local and national advertising before he even signs his second contract? I hesitate to even throw that out there as its a small factor in my opinion, but you're acting like its a guarantee or even 85% chance or better that he goes to school next year and gets drafted first or second overall. Actually, I was saying the exact opposite. So you and I are in complete agreement.

My guess is if they sign Jason Groome by way over 3.5+ mil then, they might pass on signing either Bobby Dalbec or Mike Shawaryn due to over slot $ as requested. We knew that Mike asked for $600K but didn't hear at all about Bobby. I'll be surprise if they success by signing 3 of them this Friday (Jason: over slot and Bobby/Mike: under slots) and few guys after 10th round.
