Jake (Eagan): With the Red Sox gluttony of riches at 2B, does Wendell Rijo find a different position in the future? He seems like a young superstar in the making! Ben Badler: The problem is he doesn't fit anywhere else on the diamond. He doesn't have the range for shortstop, the arm isn't suited for the left side of the infield, and between the ACL injury and not having burner speed, I don't see him in center field. But he fits well at second base and I love the bat, the approach and the way he stings the ball for a player his size. He's a potential high OBP second baseman with solid pop, but there's a couple guys ahead of him on the organizational depth chart that fit that bill. I'm sure other teams' pro scouts are keeping a close eye on him. Hey, let's turn him into the next Ben Zobrist.

Pedroia signed for reasonable money for the next several years. Betts the next Zobrist. Rijo the next Zobrist. Gragnani the next Zobrist. And lest I forget Asuagi the next Zobrist. I see a pattern here.

So I got a tad bored recently, and compiled a database of age 18 (or younger) hitters in full season ball... I used Fangraphs (which I've heard has some mistakes, and only dates back to 2006)... But here's where Rijo is currently standing...
He's got the highest walk rate of any 18 year old to have more than 50ABs at a level of full season ball, his K rate is the 38th worst out of 103 hitters, he's 5th in batting average, 1st in OBP, 10th in slugging and 5th in OPS... 16th in ISO, and his 173 wRC+ has him currently tied for first with a guy who played for the Single A Cedar Rapids in 2010... Mike Trout
Of the 34 previous hitters to have an above average wRC+ 24 of them were ranked on Baseball America's top 100 the following year, and 3 more ended up on the list within 3 years..
Anyway, I found this stuff interesting, hopefully some of you will too!
edit: Just realised I accidentally said I used Baseball America's stats, when it was Fangraphs :/
