Farrell lives to see another day... Why? Unwritten baseball rules. Can't fire a manager after a walk off or something like that.

This team is nothing without Xander. Xander and Ortiz are the best #3/#4 hitters in baseball or at least in the AL (off the top of my head - I think Harper and Murphy have been excellent #3/#4 hitters as well for the Nats). Xander's season would fit comfortably onto the back of Nomar's baseball card when he was having his prime seasons.

Unwritten baseball rules. Can't fire a manager after a walk off or something like that. Why not? The joke back then was that John Henry was having dreams they'd win the World Series and with the Disney music playing in the background they'd ask him what he's going to do and his answer would be Fire Grady Little. So if he can think that for the Series, I'm sure they can think that for the 72nd game of the year. But I wouldn't anticipate it.

Brentz not in the PawSox lineup. Probably on his way to replace Young.

I'm confused about the talk that the DH had been removed from the game, not really sure where that came from. Kimbrel's WHIP is .80, but Farrell needs to stop turning to him in ties, or work on a different pitching strategy in those situations. He finds his success as a closer because he is effectively wild, when batters aren't up against a wall they are way more patient against him. Crappy series but at least they didn't get swept. All hail Xander.

All hail Xander. I guess Marrero was being compared to a pitcher? He was in the DH slot. At home Kimbrel needs to be able to pitch in tie games. While it was a defensible strategy putting him in for a 2nd inning, I couldn't help but wonder what Robbie Ross has done to tick John Farrell off. Did he kick his dog or something? What does Robbie Ross have to do to be part of the pitching mix? What does he have to do to actually get some high leverage type innings?

It is so frustrating to start out behind, watch the offense get us a lead, then have the bullpen give it back.

Boston now just *FOUR* games below their expected W%, instead of five. Of course, the Cubs are six under, and Maddon is supposed to be the end-all/be-all manager...so clearly Farrell is better than we give him credit for.
Or something.

I'm not sure I can remember disliking a good player as much as I currently dislike Kimbrel.

“@jcmccaffrey: Farrell also said Jackie was bunging on his own.” Send him to AAA until he promises to never bunt again.

As of now though, I'd have to give the edge to Bogey/Papi.

Of course, the Cubs are six under, and Maddon is supposed to be the end-all/be-all manager...so clearly Farrell is better than we give him credit for. Or something. The Cubs are -3.2 wins versus their raw stats (according to BaseRuns from FanGraphs, with my SOS adjustments), which is not much, and might be largely the result of being such a good team. Meanwhile, the NL did so well against the AL the last three days in a ton of interleague play that the top 7 teams in MLB, in my adjusted projected final standings, are NL clubs (including the entire NL West except the Padres; the division averages 4.8 extra wins from SoS). The Sox lead the AL, but the lead over the Blue Jays is down to 4.7.
