Why not Brock Holt? Did I miss a setback of his?

Be happy for Mike Miller becoming eligible to join the Major League Baseball Alumni Association when he retires.

Might be small and lack the sheer athletic ability, but he's a hard nosed player. Actually really impressed with him from what I saw in Pawtucket last year.

I like to think I know every Red Sox major and minor league player........but who in the blue hell is Mike Miller? I had to remind myself who he was. He's the SS, the 9th round pick in 2012, who surprised everyone with an unusually good year in 2014 at Salem and Portland and sneaked into the top 60 here. He's done very little with the bat since, though. He's taking the Danny Valencia / Martin Prado / Aaron Hill, oops, I mean Josh Rutledge roster spot last occupied by Deven Marrero, who can't be recalled for another 8 days or so. Whether he goes back down in a day or two when Holt is ready, or LeMarre goes down, may be the least interesting somewhat difficult question I can ever remember the Sox facing. He takes the last open spot on the 40-man (the roster here is incorrect, as it still includes Castillo). I can't ever, ever remember three AAA organizational fillers (Miller, LeMarre, Cuevas) being on the 40 man at the same time. There are of course 13 guys on the DL (or inactive list in Johnson's case) who were ahead of them on the pre-season depth chart.

Marrero a plus defender. Why was he optioned in the first place? Makes zero sense. Somebody dropped the ball here..
Cuevas perfect example of a Player who pitched well, now on the I-95 Yo yo. Give em a chance

Give em a chance You answered your own question as far as Marrero goes. He went down because they needed Cuevas to eat innings. Then he did that job, so they sent him down for a player they needed. Miller feels like a guy who's up for a couple days, can cover 3 infield positions, and won't be claimed when you DFA him in a couple weeks or months. Holt must be close. This also feels like it might be a statement on whether they think Hernandez can play short, but not 100 percent necessarily so. I only see the need for Miller if you don't trust Hernandez there.
