“@ryanhannable: Farrell announces Joe Kelly will come back as reliever. Threw bullpen today and another Monday. Game could come mid-week.”

Glad the Red Sox decided to add Wade Davis at the deadline. More low cost moves like this will make me happy. All the best to Kelly, who just couldn't find it as a starter for the Sox.

Honestly, they could probably use him more as a starter, but that'd presumably require a longer rehab.

Kelly has a career 4.13 ERA as a starter. And I know most of that is in the NL. But I feel this move is reactionary based on 6 starts this year. You cannot convince me that O'Sullivan will be a better starter than Kelly going forward. The only other explanation is that they're confident ERod fixes his issues and comes back to hold the #4 spot along with Buchholz making the necessity of Joe Kelly, SP, unnecessary anyways.

Honestly, they could probably use him more as a starter, but that'd presumably require a longer rehab. They need help at both though. If the long-term plan is to keep him in the bullpen, and they don't think he's a good starter - and both of these are pretty reasonable things to think - then moving him to the bullpen now makes more sense then getting too worried about whether it's the optimal allocation of resources in the short term.

Get ready for Farrell to play him in high leverage no matter how good he is, he might be able to throw even harder than Barnes after all.
Also,
--- Jason Mastrodonato @jmastrodonato 59m59 minutes ago Kelly didn't love relieving in college, said his arm bothered him when he threw daily, but it's worth a shot. ---
Yeah, don't worry, Farrell is sure not to overuse anyone, LOL.

I also like to think that Buchholz and Kelly will be counterparts in the sense that one will be a reliever and one will be a starter. Unless Buchholz does well as a starter going forward and Kelly implodes, I think that they can switch spots pretty easily. Having Kelly as a (long) reliever now can assist in bringing him back as a starter down the road too.

I guess Kelly can be as maddening out of the bullpen as he is in the rotation. Why not? Might as well try it for now.

Should have been done 1.5 years ago. Every single evaluator acknowledges that he's much more interesting as a reliever than a starter.

I really hope he does well, we mock him sometimes with the Cy Kelly stuff and that trade was awfully lopsided, but he's still somewhat young and looks like a solid dude.

Love it. About two years too late, but I love it. Next move is to get rid of Buchholz and Farrell and this team could be looking pretty sharp after the break.

Kevin Thomas @clearthebases 9s9 seconds ago Farrell also said Joe Kelly scheduled to pitch out of pen for @portlandseadogs Wednesday in New Hampshire
