The line on Brian Johnson in the GCL today: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 4 K's.
Walked the first batter of the game and gave up 3 consecutive hits (grounder to 3B, liner to RF, fly ball to RF) in the first to yield the two runs. Pretty sharp in the 2nd and 3rd innings, K'ing the side (all looking) after giving up a single in his final frame.

Happy to have Brian Johnson back and I hope he's recovered from the anxiety issue he was dealing with.

Brian Johnson must be the leader in the clubhouse for the 2016 Bryce Brentz Award for "absolute worst timing for being on the DL/otherwise inactive for Pawtucket when you absolutely would've gotten a shot in the majors".
(Brentz has likely missed out on no fewer than three MLB call-ups because he was on the DL, for those unaware)

I was at the GCL game and got the opportunity to talk in length with his dad and mom. They live in Cocco Beach on the Atlantic side of Florida, and traveled to see his 1st outing since going on leave. The hits in the 1st inning were a dribbler between 3rd and home, a solid double down the right field line, and a fly ball to right center that was in the air a long time (and should have been caught IMO).
He was throwing a real good breaking ball, but had a lot of trouble commanding his fastball. In the 2nd, everything got crisper. In the 3rd it seemed everything clicked and he looked real strong. His curve looked real good as he was able to control it well and throw it for consistent strikes (mostly down in the zone). He threw 3 crisp fastballs for strikes on the corners in the 3rd.
His dad told me an interesting story about Brian starting off as a right handed thrower and he forced him to throw left-handed when he was about 6 years old. I told him how much everyone is pulling for him to be ready soon, and how much (God knows) we need him! His mom and dad said he is doing very well now and has been given the idea he will be pitching in Lowell late next week.

(Brentz has likely missed out on no fewer than three MLB call-ups because he was on the DL, for those unaware) It seems unfair that the Brentz award comes from only figuratively shooting yourself in the foot. Anyhow, while the timing of Johnson's problems suck, it's definitely a good thing that teams are more understanding of how to work psychological problems now and correctly treat them the same as physical ones. Even only ten years ago I'm sure he'd have been told to tough it out. Doing so, and getting the call to the majors and having it go poorly very likely could have led to more significant problems for him both on the field and off. Not that Garin Cecchini is playing well - a .271/.331/.373 line at Colorado Springs kinda stinks, to be honest - but given team needs and the fact that he can still hit a baseball sometimes, designating him while keeping Sean Coyle seems like one of those at-the-margins blunders that can really add up.

Eh. He's been playing 80% of his games at first base, which makes the line even worse. His .704 OPS is near the bottom of the list for the team's regulars. I'm not convinced he'd be hitting much better than Chris Dominguez is. If you figure that Coyle has probably at least been providing value on the defensive side of the ball to the AAA and now AA clubs he's been on (although how on earth is he hitting below .200 in Portland? It's like he's completely broken now. yikes...), then it's a lot closer. It's not like this is (in terms of at-the-margins moves) protecting Hassan and losing Fields where it seemed like a no-brainer and then the obvious results wound up happening, y'know?

My wife would not let me go on the 4th....said I had to bake stuff the damn lobstahs....also probably due to the 20 people we had over. Thanks for the great report. See you at the next one!

Henry Ramos just went deep for the second day in a row. I'm really happy for him after all those injuries.

To clarify, I'm not sure it was a "gamble" on his part - it's not like he had professional aspirations as a soccer player or anything.

I don't think Henry believes in sissy singles Fine, so just hit another one over the fence, and miss second base on the way around.

Devers still rolling, has his average above .250 now.
Benintendi not in the lineup. It's unclear which city he's on his way to right now.

Interesting concept, I'm surprised it hasn't been thought of before: Tip of the hat to James Dunne who recently tweeted about Berrios.

At least he didn't do what Jimmy Piersall once did (after the Sox, as a Met) and run the bases backwards. (Coincidentally, Piersall crossed my mind in he Johnson post.)

Ramos bunt single for the cycle. He knows how to bunt. It will interesting to see if he finds his way to Boston this year or is part of a trade. Nice looking player. I believe he can be a minor league free agent after the season or at least is rule five eligible.

Rosario has made a couple of nice running catches tonight.
The Fisher Cat's home 4th of July home uni's are fantastic.
Romanski's double just tied the game at 3. Our defensive oriented catcher is now hitting .315.
