Ockimey really has a nice swing and easy power. Just laced a double off the right center wall to score Basabe.

This is actually one step better. Had we kept both and had this one or both made the majors, we would have an 'X' issue. Trading one was in the cards, it had to happen, otherwise it would force a Xander trade. |

He's getting there. I saw Lowell down in Fishkill and he looked like a solid hitting prospect, but mostly of the hard line drive variety. I was told by someone that watched batting practice that he generated a bit more loft and clubbed a few long shots. Hopefully that will factor into his game performance as the season progresses. |

No 100mph fastballs today for Michael Kopech (topping out 96-97 according to the radio guys) but still toying with Wilmington batters. 6:1 K:BB with only 3 hits, 2 of which are of the infield variety.

As noted on the latest SoxProspects podcast, the reports of Kopech sitting 97 and hitting 103 were based on the stadium gun, which can be notoriously inaccurate. More likely that it was a few degrees hot and he's been his typical 94-96, touching 98-99 self.

Kopech is rapidly becoming a sensation. He should get Tom Brady consulting with him on those radar guns.
How much of it is just Kopech being fresh when everyone else is tired and beat up physically? This is impressive though for sure, in a very small sample size. He is only 20 years old still and he's in Salem.

Topped out at 103. Pointed out that only two major league pitchers had pitches this year that exceeded 102. Here's his words:
A BRIGHT, FLASHING LIGHT ON THE RADAR: In High A Salem, 20-year-old Red Sox pitching prospect Michael Kopech dominated in his Carolina League debut after missing three weeks with a muscle strain in his upper calf/lower knee region.
Though Kopech walked three batters, he allowed just one hit in four innings while striking out six – including a nine-pitch striking-out-of-the-side in the fourth inning in which his final pitch was (according to the scoreboard) a 101-pitch miles per hour comet for a called strike three.
One radar gun had the hard-throwing righty sitting at 97-100 m.p.h. throughout his outing, topping out at an Aroldis Chapman-esque 103 m.p.h.. Just two big leaguers this year – Chapman (39 times) and Mauricio Cabrera (nine times) have thrown a pitch that registered at 102.0 m.p.h. or above. Kopech’s also showed an 89-92 m.p.h. slider and a decent – if largely unnecessary – changeup. |

The radar gun that Speier referenced is the stadium radar gun. I'm not sure why you think that, there was clearly a scout in the stands with a radar gun and I believe Salem also uses radar from the dugout. I also don't think that's how he would word it if he was referring to the stadium gun. I accept that I don't know, I am wondering if you have an actual reason for saying that. |
