Kopech drills the first batter. That's got to hurt, and obviously not Kopech. Ouch!

Kopech drills the first batter. That's gotta hurt at 130 mph. second batter doubles him in Why are the Marlins transitioning Guaimaro to catcher? we had him in center. Would you catch for a team that made you Venmo your friends for the rest of your bonus?

Before he signed, there were reports that some teams saw Guaimaro as a potential catcher conversion candidate. The Marlins are apparently one of them.

It looks like we didn't trade the REAL Neo after all: 7 K 0 BB after 3 innings.

Even better about Kopech so far, 6 of his strikeouts are of the swinging variety.

Kyri "Boom Boom" Washington now with 13 HRs on the year. Not shabby.

“@alexspeier: Annnnnd… Kopech has struck out 7 of 11 batters through 3 innings.” And only 2 of the subsequent 10, so there may be some stamina he needs to work on yet. OTOH, in the first 3 innings, he had 2 FB and 1 LD; in the last two, 3 GB, 1 LD, 1 PU. That suggests a different pitch mix -- more curves and changeups. You can throw fewer pitches if you try to induce easy contact than if you try to strike everyone out, so that may have been the rationale. Just slightly less impressive than the first two outings. He's now fanned 23 of the 55 hitters he's faced (.418). Only prospect (guy aged 22 or younger) with a higher K rate (minimum a whole 10 IP) in high-A is the Tiger's #7 prospect Joe Jimenez, who looks like a future closer. Second highest rate by a SP is the Ranger's #24 Yohander Mendez, at .346. Jimenez is now in AA and Mendez is in AAA. Best mark in MLB by a starter 2008-2015, BTW was Kershaw's .338 last year.

The booth had trackman readings tonight and he was 98-100 early, 96-98 later. Starting second time through the order he used a lot of sliders and changeups.

Not a lot of mystery in AA for Moncada, it seems. That's 7 HRs in less than 100 PAs. Dude is raking.

I'm assuming both HRs were batting left.
This is Trenton, a Yankee affiliate, they're unlikely to pitch around him just because. At least they figured out how to stop him from stealing bases.

Has anyone actually ever seen Michael Kopech before? Are we convinced that he's not just an elaborate ruse? I heard he was Sidd Finch's kid. Any truth to that rumor?

Then all three walks happened after he switched pitch mixes. He was almost all fastballs in the first three innings, dominant. Best I've ever seen a pitcher over a three inning span live. Mixed pitches the next two frames, looked good, but was definitely not as sharp. Off speed stuff definitely is there though.

There's work to be done (besides sliding over to 3B).
