PawSox @pawsox 8m8 minutes ago Final line for Brian Johnson on a steamy Sunday in Columbus: 3 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 78 pitches. Keith Couch comes on in relief. That's a little less hyperbolic than desired, but Couch threw 3.1 innings of 1 run ball, with a single HR given up before toughing it out a few more outs. Fun fact: Michael Choice hit the HR, I remember when he used to be a good prospect but I forgot he was drafted 3 picks ahead of Chris Sale, 5 picks after Pomeranz and 403 picks before Keith Couch. I have absolutely no idea what I'm trying to say. Kinda' do. Couch has been pitching pretty good of late. In fact? Really good, until forced to come in and bail out Johnson from his rehab start in relief and wasn't the same, super sharp self. I'd like to see Couch get a start 1st if anyone within the organization is called 1st in an emergency start myself.

It's been 100 PAs in AA, and his historical strikeout rates are fine. If he's still striking out so often at the end of the year, the risk escalates, but we're not there yet. K rate stabilise after 60 PAs, he has 112 PAs so far. I also don't think that striking out at 20+% vs A ball pitchers while not being challenged hard in terms of age advancement (Devers,Xander) is "fine". The closest analogy I can come up with is Byron Buxton: The uber athlete with contact issues (their numbers in High A look similar too) "Stabilization" rates are not some magic threshold after which a trend becomes "real." They're also based solely on major league data and are not as applicable to minor league data. Sample size concerns are still very real. Moncada is 21 years, one month in AA, which is extremely age-advanced-- roughly on par with Devers (one year, four months younger and one level lower) and not that far behind of Bogaerts (who reached AA in his age-20 season). Alternative, someone like Kris Bryant, who struck out a lot in the high minors but whom scouts loved because he had elite plate discipline and bat speed. Remember, like Bryant, no scout has raised serious concerns about Moncada's contact ability. Instead, we hear stuff about how he's striking out a lot looking on pitches that are outside the zone because he knows the zone better than the umpires.

Kemp with two more bombs...that strikeout rate though. I actually posted on day three of the draft thread from that year that I wanted them to take Kemp about 45 m before the did...got a Grady Sizemore vibe about him which may actually be somewhat accurate as a best case with his pop, k/bb rate, speed and questionable hit tool. Thought he'd be swiping more bags given reports of his 6.4 60y and the power would come later so have been pleasantly surprised by early returns in that regard but until he gets that k rate down to at least 25-30% he's got a climb.

I want to see a Kemp AB. Looking at his numbers this guy must swing out of his shoes. It's weird because even though this kid has a 117 wRC+, and probably around 125 after tonight, you have to consider keeping him in Greenville next year with that absurd 38% K rate. The good news for him is that his speed should allow him to become a solid baserunner and COF defender. He's got a Brandon Jacobs vibe to him although their builds are different. Maybe he slugs his way into being a good trade chip.

There's going to be a point where Moncada will have to give up batting for the right side, I think its what's holding him back from a MLB or AAA call up. But as far as our top 3 goes (based on baseball age where he won't be 20 until the season is over) Devers is 2 yrs younger than Moncada and 3 yrs younger than AB. He has one of the most beautiful swings I have seen and has incredible power playing a very good third base, so I would not be eager to trade him any time soon. Two years from now (at his current pace) he will be Yoan's age and I am betting he won't be in AA. Four of Moncada's Ks came against a RHP so he must have been batting from his stronger side. I hope his slide is just midseason fatigue as he did travel to SD at the ASB. Not alarmed, but keeping an eye on Yoan.
