Awful news, makes me wonder if my boy Couch pitched his last game in the organization for some reason. It will be sad to see him becoming someone else's version of Sandy Leon. Just disheartening.

5IP 1H 0ER 1BB 11K for Kopech. Then doesn't get an out in the 6th. It will be interesting to hear what/how hard he was throwing. You don't get 11 K's in 5 innings throwing BP.

Walk, hit batter, and then a bunt single loaded the bases to start the 6th. Took him out after 90 pitches.

Kopech needs to be challenge. I think a few starts at AA and then the AFL will help his development. BB, HBP and WP need work, but he also needs to face hitters that want to hit against him.

Control and command issues aside, does anybody really think this kid is being challenged? Send him to Portland already..

Control and command issues aside, does anybody really think this kid is being challenged? Send him to Portland already.. The Red Sox are going to leave Kopech in Salem, he needs innings and with Salem playoff bound and Portland season ending in a little more than 4 weeks, there are more innings to be pitched in Salem. The Red Sox also like for their top prospects to experience that playoff atmosphere, and since they can get him a taste of some better hitting in the AFL, I think it will work out well enough.

Through 5 innings and 79 pitches, and 11Ks/1BB (before he seemed to get a little tired), he had: 53% whiffs per swing, which is about double what the leaders are in MLB. 24% swinging strikes, MLB leaders are 14-16%. There weren't many swings (I counted 36), but when they did swing, they couldn't make contact. I counted 5 ground balls, 2 for singles, and no fly balls. His K-BB now stands at 39%-14% or 25%. My sense is we'll find out in the next week if they are thinking about bringing Kopech up to MLB, because if they do, they will promote him to AA to see what he does there.

5IP 1H 0ER 1BB 11K for Kopech. Fanned the first 5 batters swinging and the sixth on a called strike. Then got 4 K's (three swinging) and 4 ground balls from the next 8 hitters. I can't recall a more dominant first 14 BFP in a game. He must have tired at that point, going BB, Ks, BB, HB, bunt single. You have to like an outing where a guy had an 0.60 FIP (and an even more impressive xFIP -- I should construct that calculator, too) ... but was working on a -1.08 before melting down (24.22 after that). Oh, and the AP game recap doesn't mention him! But it wasn't written by a human being ("This story was generated by Automated Insights using data from and in cooperation with MLBAM"). I think their algorithm needs work.

The two runs charged to Kopech, after he left with the bases loaded, were given up by Bobby Poyner in relief. They came home on a ground out and a fielders choice.
