Looking at the Red Sox arbitration history they seem to have a very good success rate at arbitration. Last last year's Fernando Abad arbitration case was the first to be heard since 2002 against the Red Sox. Which the Red Sox won. Before that they had a 12 and 5 record from 1975 to 2002. Im all in for signing Mookie to an extension . Rather than pay JDM 25 million dollars a year pay Mookie the money.

I am for an extension with Mookie as well. I hope he is willing more this year to an extension since he knows anything can happen with injuries. But I think Mookie is going to play out his arbitration years and try to maximize his money earnings the next 3 years. I hope I am wrong.

If the Sox can't extend Mookie soon or by the end of 2018, then they should think about pursuing another option to lead this franchise.
The Sox have 4 different options going forward. Sign J.D. Martinez or not this off-season. Then if the Sox can't sign Martinez, the Sox got Harper sitting there in 2018. Then you have Arenado in 2019 if the Sox miss out on Harper (maybe you can have both Arenado and J.D. Martinez on the same team, but probably not because of payroll). If you miss out on Arenado, then go all in with Mookie and hope and pray that he stays. You can hopefully sign both Martinez and Mookie in this 3 year period. I'd prefer to go the Martinez and Mookie route and not one of Arenado or Harper.

Can't hedge your bets on a player that has shown zero willingness to sign long-term. Would love to see Mookie stay for a long time, but there are 2 other players the next 2 years in free agency that's as good as Mookie in terms of value.
Arenado and Harper are in the same class as Mookie.

I apologize for the "verging on."
You're having a daily freakout about the status of a guy who isn't a free agent for another three years.
Just... Calm down, dude.
He's awesome. He can continue to be awesome while the Red Sox win, and then leave. Or maybe stay. I prefer he stay, being the sentimental liker-of-baseball type that I am. But sometimes they leave.

The Red Sox are going to pay someone a lot of money in 2022, and I'm sure they're hard at work trying to figure out who's best to pay it too. I mean, what the hell else have these people been doing all winter?

I'm not freaking out. I was exploring possibilities where the Sox could stay ahead of the Mookie Betts extension scenario, in case the Sox can clearly see it isn't coming. So far, it seems that way until Betts has a change of heart when it comes to the year to year approach.
Harper and Arenado would be great backup plans.

Hey I hope you're right, for the record.
Maybe the Sox plan on offering more money and another extension offer better than the one last year.
Got to keep trying. I thought you were being sarcastic with your last post.

I have to agree, they have to look at the big picture. And that picture involves long term analysis of the entire system year to year. That doesn't mean anything is etched in stone but every possibility in regards to the future roster needs to be looked at continuously, thought about and discussed.

One thing I would add, since Mookie is coming off a down year, which is more a fluke, he will not sign an extension now... if he has a great year in 18, perhaps he will be more open to an extension?

With all of the top free agents next year, and the teams preparing to sign those free agents, it would be best for the Red Sox to wait for the teams who miss out and then offer Mookie as an alternative if there is no extension progress.
This does not leave out the possibility that the Red Sox sign one of the top players then choose to deal Mookie for a King's Ransom while he still has 2 years of control left.
This is not the right off-season to seriously consider a Mookie trade.

Why hasn't Devers signed an extension yet??!!

What is the logic in deciding on which player besides Mookie that they'll pay market value without knowing if that player will ever reach free agency? Why not just pay Mookie market value? Or do we assume that the only reason Mookie would test free agency in 3 years is because he hates the Red Sox and wants to leave and therefore would not re-sign at market level? Please do not answer these rhetorical questions.

Should we extend Groome now? I mean before he starts to think about getting away.

Does anyone else think our 2025 first round pick hates playing in Boston? He'll be a free agent in just 15 years and hasn't signed a 10 year extension yet.

Ugh, still can't believe they're calling him up at the end of 2027 and getting that service time clock started, so foolish. They probably won't even play him behind that major league veteran who is hogging the space on the roster and the manager likes in the clubhouse.

Ok but unlike Groome and hypothetical draft picks, the Red Sox should already have signed Betts to an extension. Is that even debatable?

I was checking out some of the recent Red Sox contract extensions. And the Pedroia contract extension that he signed in 2014 is very interesting ; 8/110, 18m deferred over 9 years. then a bonus structure that goes like this;
MVP Gold Glove 100k 1st 250k. Silver Slugger 100k 2nd 150k. World Series MVP 100k. 3rd 100k. All Star 50k 4th 75k
And the pay out of the 8/110; '14 12.5m '15 12.5m '16 13m '17 15m '18 16m '19 15m '20 13m '21 12m
Would Mookie or any other current star take this type of contract extension?

I don't think Mookie will do it. Pedey took a huge home town discount... Mookie does not seem to be interested in that. Plus, they were at different stages in their career too.

And here's Mike Trout's extension.
'15 5.25m 23years old '16 15.25 24yo '17 19.25 25yo '18 33.25 26yo '19 33.25 27yo '20 33.25 28yo '21 free agent
Mookie will be 25 this season. Mookie finished 2nd in the 2016 MVP vote. Im not panicking but I would think it take a tick below Trout's extension to keep Betts.
