I think I recall one of the leaders of this board saying that Kopeck would not be moved above Groome in the ratings on this board this year for any reason (or words to that effect). I believe Mr Kopeckh is doing everything he can to make it difficult to keep that promise. If I had a vote I would have him ranked above Groome at this point.
He is putting up ridiculous numbers.

Unusual day on the farm today -- the four higher-level teams won (scoring 37 runs in the process), the four lower-level teams lost.

Over/under: 9.5 strikeouts for Kopech in his start? I'll say he has an off game and only gets nine. Oops. Good bet to lose, though.

So has he hit 150 on the gun yet? He could but he doesn't want to.

So has he hit 150 on the gun yet? He would kill the catcher, so he's holding back!

I think I recall one of the leaders of this board saying that Kopec kh would not be moved above Groome in the ratings on this board this year for any reason (or words to that effect). I believe Mr Kopec kh is doing everything he can to make it difficult to keep that promise. If I had a vote I would have him ranked above Groome at this point. He is putting up ridiculous numbers. After his last 3 starts, I'm inclined to agree with this.

Second time I've seen Kopech live, once in Salem, once tonight. He was a far better pitcher tonight. The fastball is enough to dominate the A+ level. His change/cut-change was filthy playing off the fastball, and he threw the slider for strikes a couple times, but not too much overall.
Was pretty crazy when he hit 100+ after 80 pitches topping out at 99.5

Was pretty crazy when he hit 100+ after 80 pitches topping out at 99.5 According to the gameday app, he was really painting the edges all night. But I didn't realize he was throwing the new change with movement when he was doing that. Do you happen to know how fast the change was? A coach seemed to say the new change with movement was 89 MPH! That may make two new plus pitches, now, with the 91 MPH slider he's already had the last few games. It's amazing how much progress he's made in such a short time. He had three flyballs, I see. Were any of them hard? Did he seem to be hitting the mitt? I see that of the 10 strikeouts, 9 were swinging! The reports say there was one soft infield hit. And then that got erased on a double play. And three popups. Quite a night! Thanks for the update!

After his last 3 starts, I'm inclined to agree with this. It's always impressive when a guy has more strikeouts than baserunners allowed. Kopech has allowed 21 baserunners in his last 5 starts. He's fanned that many guys in his last two starts (and 49 total). His last three starts, of course, are stupid good. 62 BFP 28 K swinging 4 K looking 4 BB 2 HBP 12 GB (3 for hits, including 1 INF; 2 for GDP) 1 Bunt hit 5 OF FB 4 PU 2 LD (both for hits, 1 a double) The 0 HR allowed is obviously good, but of the 56 guys who didn't walk or get hit by a pitch, only 7 had a LD or OF FB. He has 71% of the balls in play being grounders or popups, a figure no starting pitcher in MLB has achieved 2008 -2015 (minimum 80 IP). So it's not just that his .419 K-BB dwarf's Kershaw's .291 from last year, but he has had elite ball in play results as well, which is not at all obvious to folks reading box scores. Just stupid, silly good. It's an 0.64 FIP and an xFIP of about 1.00. He had a 2.75 FIP in his first 5 starts and a 1.47 in his next 2.

I think over the last 5 years there have only been two starters with more Ks than baserunners: Kershaw and Jose Fernandez I might need to check that though

If Kopech continues this performance, by the end of the year he'll be BA's top pitching prospect.

MiLB Pipeline agrees, saying "Michael Kopech may be the hottest pitcher in all of Minor League Baseball these days as he continues to shut down opposing lineups with a plethora of strikeouts."

Kopech has certainly closed the gap for me, but it's still Groome.
Groome: LHP, Plus FB at 90-95, plus curve, above-average change, reportedly has good command of all three, clean mechanics Kopech: RHP, Plus to maybe Double-Plus FB sits 96-98, above-average to maybe plus slider, below-average to maybe average change, may be in the process of cleaning up iffy command and control; has done a great job cleaning up his mechanics since being drafted
Call it a wash on makeup while we're at it.
Results are great, but I'm not going to freak out over a month's worth of performances. I'm probably not going to reevaluate until Ian gets a look at Groome (I pray) and hopefully Kopech too at Instructs. It's tough to compare a guy you have only reports on versus a guy you've seen who is now pitching better than what you've seen, but we kind of have to.
Either way, I'm not going to call anyone crazy for wanting to do the converse. My preferring Groome says more about Groome than Kopech at this point due to the latter's recent performance. I'm glad I get to cover both of them.

I am not concerned as whether k or g is ranked higher, but I am inclined to think k is looking like a grade 6, a solid 3 starter.
