9/15-9/18 Red Sox vs. Yankees Series Thread

Yeah, I actually thought that Kelly inning was a really good sign. He didn't really have it, but his stuff is so dominant now that he still got a couple of Ks and got out of the inning without giving up a run. If he keeps it up, he changes the complexion of the playoff bullpen pretty substantially. He looks almost exactly like Kimbrel to me. The good and the bad.

I had to re-check the score this morning as I thought I dreamed what happened last night.

Kelly looks good enough in his (admittedly small sampled) MLB time so far that I wonder why the front office took so long to call him up.

Any thoughts on whether Robbie Scott just passed Abad on the LOOGY depth chart and maybe for a postseason roster spot? He has a great spin rate that makes his fastball much better than it looks on the radar gun.
Also, don't look now, but Tazawa has 5 straight scoreless appearances. I thought he looked dominant last night.

Robbie Scott absolutely looks the part of a solid LOOGY--certainly more impressive than what we've seen from Abad. Of course, I'm always in favor of keeping an extra arm--especially a lefty--in the postseason.

Lefties are 2 for 21 against Abad since the trade with 7 K's and 1 BB, and 1 for 5 with 1 K against Scott. If the goal is to have a strict LOOGY, I'd go with Abad. Ross and Rodriguez are in the playoff bullpen if Farrell wants a longer stint by a lefty.
If Rodriguez is pushed into the rotation because Wright isn't back I guess it gets dicier. The bigger issue is that neither Abad or Scott should be facing a righty in the playoffs in anything other than a blowout.

Usually they keep one fewer arm to add an extra bench player, usually a fast one for pinch running (Dave Roberts!). There are plenty of rest days for the bullpen built into the schedule.
It's hard to believe that they'll go with Scott over Abad's longer history, but if he's impressive enough ... maybe. Although I'm not sure there's room for either, if Wright is on the team.

His career splits by handedness and leverage, which I posted within the last week, are remarkable. He gets everyone out in low leverage and nobody out in high leverage, and has a big platoon split in medium leverage. JF is managing smarter, Kelly looks like a real asset, both Koji and Taz look like they're back ... if Wright stays hurt, it looks like they have Tazawa, Barnes, and Abad fighting for one spot.

Watched the game on and off last evening, switching from the video to Gameday - which is where I caught the Ortiz HR - and back while I was working. I drove into town to run errands and for some takeout just as Kelly was wrestling his way out of the 9th. As I was ducking in and out of the car, I heard parts of the rally. I climbed back in with our dinner just in time to hear Castiglione's call on the Ramirez game-winner. Very satisfying.
For me, the best thing about Hanley Ramirez' season is that he should end up playing 145+ games. That will be the most since 2012, and the second most since 2009. When he's healthy he's been a good hitter. The problem has been keeping him that way. First base has likely been a big help with that.
BR has him approaching 3 offensive wins by the time the regular season is done. The defensive experience hasn't been as smooth and it's cost him in overall value. But if it helps him stay on the field that's fine with me. Easy enough to chalk up the defensive metrics to a learning curve. He sure distorts the force field in the middle of the lineup when he's this hot.
Add: They finally gave Tazawa some needed rest and stopped using him every other day, and sometimes on consecutive days. He's too valuable to burn like that. I'd like it if they stick to the current regime which has him prepping and/or relieving every third day or so. Let's see how smart they can be about this.

I did notice that Hanley's defensive stats have been slipping all year. I wouldn't mind if he becomes the primary DH next year, though he could also play some 1B. He hasn't been great at helping out the rest of the infield.

He hasn't been great at helping out the rest of the infield. Maybe he could play 1b against lefties(Shaw against righties) next year? Allowing Chris Young to DH against them. I don't want to platoon a young guy like Benny. Young can play LF when you want to rest any of the of's. With Benny sliding into CF or RF when you give JBJ or Mookie a day off.

You can call that liner back to Kelly luck, but he's been dominant since his return to the MLB on 9/2. 7 IP, 11 Ks (14.14 K/9), 3 BB (3.86 BB/9), 1.29 FIP, 2.25 xFIP. Hopefully he keeps it up, because it's kind of reminiscent of Andrew Miller. He's basically been a two pitch RP since coming back and it's worked wonders -- so far.

JF is managing smarter, Kelly looks like a real asset, both Koji and Taz look like they're back ... if Wright stays hurt, it looks like they have Tazawa, Barnes, and Abad fighting for one spot. BOS is two games behind CLE with 16 to go and they hold the tiebreaker in the event of a tie. Projected rotation (assumes Wright/Salazar are unavailable) G1 - Price (L) vs. Kluber (R) G2 - Porcello (R) vs. Carrasco (R) G3 - Rodriguez (L) vs. Bauer (R) G4 - Buchholz (R)/Pomeranz (L) vs. Tomlin (R) (note: I think it is likely that CLE goes with three starters only, whereas BOS is more likely to go with four and not have anyone pitch on short rest)BOS projected bullpen - Kimbrel, Uehara, Ziegler, Kelly, Ross, Pomeranz/Buchholz, one of Barnes/Tazawa/Abad (I would lean towards Buchholz as the starter, with Pomeranz/Tazawa in the bullpen)CLE projected bullpen - Allen, Miller, Shaw, Otero, McAllister, Manship, Crockett BOS projected lineup - Pedroia, Bogaerts, Ortiz, Betts, Ramirez, Shaw, JBJ, Leon, Young/Benintendi (even with an all-RHP rotation, I would be inclined to split Young and Benintendi)BOS projected bench - Hill, Benintendi/Young, Hanigan, Holt +1 (Hernandez as PR?)CLE projected lineup - Davis, Kipnis, Lindor, Napoli, Santana, Ramirez, Guyer, Crisp, Perez CLE projected bench - Gomes, Naquin, Chisenhall, Martinez +1 Personally, I think CLE is a favorable matchup for BOS in the ALDS, assuming BOS wins the AL East.

Personally, I think CLE is a favorable matchup for BOS in the ALDS, assuming BOS wins the AL East. Cleveland in the ALDS and Texas in the ALCS would be a dream post-season, they're not very scary at all. Frankly, I think the biggest adversary the Red Sox have to go through besides themselves is whoever gets out alive out of the AL East in the wild card. I especially do not want to face Toronto, they're the most talented team in the AL this year IMO.

Speaking of reverting to being John Farrell, anyone with any idea why Young is starting tonight with a RHP on the mound for NYY? Does Benintendi have bad stats vs. this guy in minor league encounters or is this just more "proven veteran presence in LF" BS? I'm not seeing any pronounced splits that favor right handed batters as was the case with Gausman.
SOX v NY: Pedroia 2B; Bogaerts SS; Ortiz DH; Betts RF; Ramirez 1B; Shaw 3B; Young LF; Leon C; Bradley CF; Buchholz P

Considering how much faster he came back than his original timetable, and his sparse playing time since his return, I really don't think Benintendi is particularly close to 100%. If so it makes sense that they're going to ease him in and not start him on consecutive days.

Right, can't be too mad but I'm a bit greedy since I'm going tonight, what can I say Benny is fun to watch.

At least Chris Young is in Fenway, where his pull power plays.
