And yes Logan Allen was the prize of the deal for San Diego.
Manny Margot is a question mark offensively. I think he'll hit better but will he get on base enough to be more than a bottom of the order hitter?
Guerra isn't going amount to much and Asuaje is probably not much more than a utility man.
If I were a Padres fan, I'd hope that my team gets something valuable for three years of service for one of the best closers in baseball, because if Allen didn't amount to anything, they'd be left with practically nothing to show for the deal.
When it's all said and done it'll be 4 - 5 years of Allen plus what he fetches in a deal when he gets too expensive for San Diego for at least 3 years of Kimbrel during a stretch where the Sox are competing for division titles and have World Series aspirations and whatever compensation the Sox get when they give him a QO if he leaves.
That said, you still have to wonder when the Sox will actually develop a starter who they can plug into their rotation as a mainstay.
Could you explain the humid air thing? I'm not sure that's accurate, but am genuinely curious and willing to listen.
There is a book called "Physics of Baseball" that explains this and many other cool aspects of the game. Excerpts are available on many Internet websites, including a website maintained by the author, Alan Nathan. Physics of Baseball

There are caveats. Humid air is lighter than dry air at the same temperature and pressure. That's not what you find on the West coast in the summer. In the evening when it's clear, long-wave radiation (no convection through the air just straight out to space) creates inversions. A cold moist layer is trapped under a blanket of warmer air. In Seattle it's not unusual to drop 20° from the start of the game to the later innings. That really has an impact on flyballs. Real blasts can get out, but many just die in the outfield.

Former Sox farmhand Gabe Speier got traded yet again yesterday.
Its the 4th time he's been traded in his 5 year pro career. The 2013 19th rounder spent a year and a half with the GCL Red Sox before being the 3rd piece coming from Boston in the Porcello trade, behind Cespedes and Alex Wilson. After a year in Detroit's system he got traded twice in the 2015-2016 offseason, first to ATL for Cameron Maybin, and then going to Arizona as part of the Shelby Miller - Dansby Swanson deal.
He's now with KC via yesterday's Jon Jay trade.

BA tipped me off on this one when he was included in their report today: After a good start to the year, Michael Kopech is having a rough recent go of the IL. In four June starts he's thrown 16 innings, striking out 20, and walking 21. For the season, his walk rate is 15.2%. His 29.0% K rate is still second best in the IL among qualifiers, but he's not very close to first - that's Jalen Beeks, at 34.3%.
It's probably best that Kopech isn't in an organization that is in contention right now, because there'd be a lot of pressure to get him into the bullpen.

Was wondering why I hadn't heard anything on him. Meanwhile, Gerson Bautista's been up and down, currently up. He started the year in Double-A, with his first call-up in the middle of that stint. Put up a really weird line: 9.1 IP, 12 hits, 5 runs, NO walks and 15 K. In AAA he's been a lot more like the Bautista we knew, with the inflated hits and runs you'd expect in the PCL. He's struggled in the majors but that's probably to be expected.

Logan Allen was ranked #88 overall in BBAs latest update of their top 100 Prospects.
That trade seems like a win-win to me.

Carson Fulmer P - Struggling in AAA and majors for White Sox A fun activity is to check out the 2015 draft day thread and see all the people upset the Red Sox took Benintendi over Fulmer. An even more fun activity is to match those people up with the ones who are still kvetching about Trey Ball. The White Sox didn't do Fulmer any favors by pushing him so fast. Like, check out his 2016 game log, his first pro season: www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=fulmer001car&type=pgl&year=2016 Nothing in that Birmingham run indicates "ready for a promotion to Triple-A" much less "yeah let's just call him straight to the majors to start burning up his service time and options on a cruddy team." He's still only 24, and I like his chances to turn things around, even if it's as a reliever. I'm guessing the White Sox recalled him on 9/4 or whenever in 2016 and just didn't use him so he didn't actually end up burning that option, but if they didn't he is out of options after this year.

Lots of folks thought he wouldn't stay a starter, so it probably made sense for him to actually establish some success as a starter before jerking him around. It's not like they were a playoff team looking for a bullpen boost either.

Yeah, exactly. Even a contender using a young pitcher it such a way would be make me cringe. For a non-contender to do so is malpractice.

I'll be heading to a (Hillsboro) Hops game on Sunday. Not gonna lie, it would depress me to see Owens there with a multi-walk/HBP outing. I hate it when this kind of stuff happens to pitchers.

Had missed this, but JB Wendelken got called up to Oakland before the break. He'd last pitched in the bigs in 2016 before getting TJ.

If I have it right, I believe that the PBS American Masters broadcast on Ted Williams is 9pm this coming Monday.
The above film will be a part of that. "The Holy Grail"

Old friend Travis Shaw is moving to second base to accommodate the Brewers' recent trade for Mike Moustakas. Will be curious to see how he does there.
