There is no one like Sale. There is no other option like him and this team is in win now mode. Moncada is literally helping the White Sox win right now by hitting another homerun. ...and he will likely keep on doing so long after Sale has earned his keep. This is what it means to be a Sox fan. You can travel back to the decision to resign Pedroia to a very team-friendly contract, but one that takes him through age 37. That undoubtedly played into the decision to trade Moncada. That and the relentless pressure from local - and even national media - for the team to always remain competitive if only to pump up the eyeballs when they play NY. The White Sox weren't fools, they asked for an got the top prospect the team had along with three other names. That greatly increases the odds that one or more will pan out. No one should be surprised that Basabe - who's still only 21 - is starting to show real promise, or that Kopech keeps throwing BBs. That was a pile of talent. Dombrowski said it best: "This is going to hurt". There's no doubt that the wins from those traded assets will keep accumulating, but we all need to suck it up and look forward, not backward.

Actually, probably second base and they don't re-sign Nunez. Yes, and when Pedroia comes back, he might become the starting center fielder. Note: I'm NOT trying to redo the Sale trade, just saying where Moncada would play if he were here.

Yeah, probably splitting time between the outfield and infield I imagine (a lot of second base until Pedrioa returns). I wouldn't want to see this rotation without Sale right now though. You'd have a bounce back Porcello, a Pomeranz with a diminished fastball so far due to injury, a solid David Price, a solid Eduardo Rodriguez, and probably Hector Velazquez. That is still better than I'd imagine, but probably not good enough to win in October. The Sox would have a near ready Kopech available though which stings, but Sale can make it worth it to the Sox the next year or two.

With that homer, Moncada is up to .250/.355/.538. A .893 OPS is pretty fantastic for a second baseman, especially one who doesn't turn 23 for another month. He also is on pace to strike out 278 times, which is maybe too many. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Moncada is undeterred by any skepticism. Since posting this, he's at .348/.375/.522 with 9 Ks in 24 PA. Now on pace for 293 strikeouts. Note: I am making zero judgment on the Sale trade in this space. Just appreciating.

The trade is working out as expected.
Chris Sale was runner-up for Cy Young Award winner and the difference between finishing 1st or being the Wild Card in 2017, which unfortunately, ultimately didn't matter.
And Chris Sale will likely be in contention for the Award this year and probably next year.
And there's a chance that the Sox can sign him long-term if they want to as risky as it might be, so it's not a given that after next year the Sox have nothing to show for the deal with Chicago.
But it's not shocking that the White Sox have an emerging superstar in Moncada and one of the top pitching prospects in Kopech or a promising young OF in Basabe and a potential reliever in Diaz (I believe that was the name of the young reliever the Sox gave up?).
That's the price you'd expect to pay for 3 years of a young cost-controlled ace starting pitcher in his prime.
It'll stink not to have Moncada being at 2b as Pedroia ages, or Kopech fronting the rotation as a young ace or Basabe being in line to replace JBJ.
But ultimately, like the Hanley/Sanchez for Beckett/Lowell deal it'll be judged, unfairly, by did the Red Sox win the World Series? If they don't, the window of contention passes them by, Sale is gone or not the same pitcher, and the others develop as anticipated - then it'll be judged harshly.
If the Sox win the Series or even the pennant with Sale leading the way and the others develop it'll be seen as a win-win deal, the way the Sox/Marlins deal from Nov 2005 is judged.
It's a risky deal, one that personally I wouldn't have made - I said as much the day they made the deal, but given where the Sox are in their contention cycle, the deal makes all the sense in the world.
I'm just thankful it's Basabe they gave up and not Devers!

Checking in on a few guys who I'm still rooting hard for:
Bryce Brentz now with the Mets is doing the exact same thing as last year: .271/.336/.542 with 7 HR compared to .271/.334/.529 last year
Noe Ramirez with a 2.68 FIP in 18.2 IP with the Angels. K/9 are up to 12.5 right now but he's also sporting a 1.607 WHIP.
Travis Shaw is putting up much more reasonable (but still good) numbers this year. .237/.318/.467 with 7 HR. According to baseball-reference, he's also graded out as the best defensive 3B in the NL. Obviously tiny sample for defensive metrics and I haven't watched his games to see if it matches the eye test, but still encouraging nonetheless.

There is no way Shaw is the best defensive 3B in NL.

There is no way Shaw is the best defensive 3B in NL. Yeah, obviously not. But he's put up good metrics three years in a row now after being a first base only prospect. That's more the point I was trying to emphasize as being encouraging.

Once every few months I'm reminded that Tommy Hottovy has a job called "Run Prevention Coordinator" for the Cubs. Despite the ridiculous title his interviews are always insightful.

Looking over the Padres stats it was interesting to look some of the players stats.
Margot .194 .241 .298 .539
Asuaje .193 .256 .284 .541
Hosmer .277 .375 .503 .878
Seems like Hosmer might have finally broken the every other year curse.

So 2 of the Thornburg prospects injured. Dubon hopefully comes back next year, he was one guy I really have liked following, even after leaving the red sox organization.

www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=matije000jj-JJ Matijevic, who the Red Sox took in 2014 and we thought they had an outside shot to sign, ended up getting taken by the Astros in the second round last year after a good run at the University of Arizona. He's killing it this year: he hit .354/.446/.708 in a (admittedly conservative) placement in the Midwest League, and .328/.344/.655 since a promotion to the Carolina League. He is, however, no longer a shortstop or anything close to it. He's played only left field and DH since being drafted, save for one game where he subbed at first base last year, possibly following an injury.
