Carson Smith’s return from Tommy John surgery has suffered another setback. The right-handed reliever hasn’t thrown off a mound in two weeks because of soreness in his surgically repaired elbow, manager John Farrell said. It’s his second setback since the start of spring training. Smith underwent Tommy John last May 24. He began throwing in spring training, but had to back off after feeling soreness. He resumed throwing from a mound earlier this month, but once again had to draw back. “Once he got on the mound with some aggression and good intensity, he was throwing the ball well,” Farrell said. “As a result, there’s been some soreness that has reared its head. We’ve had to back him off, back into long toss. We’re hopeful that in the very near future that mound progression resumes.” The hope had been that Smith would be ready to return by June, but that assumed a perfect progression in his rehab. He was instead moved to the 60-day disabled list on Thursday to make room for new addition Chase d’Arnaud fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2017/04/27/red-sox-notebook-carson-smith-suffers-setback-newcomer-chase-darnaud-will-help-address-lack-of-infield-depth/

Hopefully Smith will come back this year. I would guess August-September based on reports and the usual 12-18 month timetable associated with TJ.
Thornburg worries me. He was 'diagnosed' with a weak arm in late February ascribed to misinterpreting an exercise program. If that report is true, bad on the Sox for lack of oversight. But that was 2 months ago. Since then he has had "shoulder impingement" reportedly due to being overzealous in strengthening a weak arm. He still cannot throw from a mound. This is worrisome in the extreme given prior reported injury/delivery/structural issues.
We need these 2 relievers especially with weak LH bullpen entries. If Thornburg would benefit from surgery, get it done now and hope for a return late 2019. 60 days seems a long time to remedy mere weakness issues and still not be able to throw from a mound.

Robbie Ross to the minors. Ben Taylor up. Chase d'Arnaud in. Steve Selsky out.
The Red Sox have no damn clue what they are doing.

I can do what that guy does for this team at 5% of the cost. I'm a lefty too. Kind of a major blown opportunity on Dombrowski's part.

Why in the world would they keep Abad over Ross? That's insane. Ross is arguably their second best reliever. Farrell doesn't use Abad. I was actually thinking they should bring Workman in while Barnes is out, and Taylor over Workman is fine. But over Ross? Nah.

Clueless? I'd bring Taylor up for once he gets comfortable, he'll be even more effective. Last year his velo was up to 97, but during his short stinks, he's high 80s low 90s. He's been more worried about location, picky corners, etc... just go after those hitters and utilize the rising fb from his "drop and drive" approach. Workman isn't ready. Although his stats are awesome, he's relying on his slider and location, but fb is high 80s and low low 90s. He'll get lit up in the Bigs. If he can't increase velo by June, cut him loose.
What the Sox need is relievers who don't get under the ball like Hembee, Kimbrel and Kelly. With a short porch and the likelihood of balls sailing up in the zone, they are doomed for failure, HRs, Walks, etc.. Look for a "tall and fall" reliever who has great downward angle. Have the Sox package up all those right handed relievers in the system for one of the above.
And what does signing Chase A tell Devon M? Geez

If it's only for 2 games, then there's no point in dumping Abad until it's actually necessary. What if Robbie Scott needs TJS tomorrow? The bigger question is why wasn't Scott optioned instead of Ross? Seems needless to piss Ross off who hasn't been in the minors in years.

Dombrowski trades Travis Shaw+ for a DL stint, and puts Robbie Ross Jr. in the minors. Makes sense. This front office really is infuriating.

Yeah, I think you can reasonably argue for keeping Abad over Scott. Ross is better than both of them though, and more versatile. Going into a three game series against the Cubs -- without Porcello or Sale making starts -- it'd be nice to have Ross in the bullpen for a potential three-inning appearance.

And what does signing Chase A tell Devon M? Geez That you need to hit better than .130/.149/.174 in Triple-A if you want to catch a whiff of the big leagues? Seriously, it's far more likely that Marrero gets DFA than called up at this point. He's the second-worst hitter in the system right now.

Re: Ross - there is the no small matter of his diminished velocity - 2+ ticks on his 4-seamer and an alarming 4 on his cutter; the last time he had velo like this was 2014 when his ERA was 6+
He had better not be their 2nd-best reliever.
AFA Abad - ?

Agreed. Our lefty contingent is subpar for a top team.... likely significantly less than average team to team. Ross is a high effort guy who is not now dependable with velocity decline, Scott in a loogy role looks ok and Abad isn't worth discussing.
Imagine if we had signed Chapman?
Power lefty relief is a spot DD looks to upgrade at the deadline (at the latest). I feel badly for Workman...doesn't look like he is going to get it back.

Figured this was a good time to link to Fangraphs' splits leaderboard: MLB team LHP RPs leaderboard: www.fangraphs.com/leaderssplits.aspx?splitArr=97,43&strgroup=season&statgroup=1&startDate=2017-03-01&endDate=2017-11-01&filter=&position=P&statType=team&autoPt=false&sort=18,-1&pg=0 Looks like by most measures they're 18th to 21st or so in the game. So below average but not significantly so?

Never say never...Speier reported him as averaging 93.5 his last two outings and working at 95-96 in one. Workman also claimed that his command is better than ever. He's certainly had numbers if not stuff...could be a huge addition.
