It's weird when you follow a team and it feels like a player is doing better than he actually is. Bryce Brentz hit three homers this week and seems like he's had a couple other key knocks. But I just checked on him and his OBP is .224.
Anyway, I was away this weekend and couldn't give my daily Aneury Tavarez updates, but he got a hit in each game. .377/.473/.475. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll be at the Sea Dogs game in Hartford today. Eager to see how Devers looks in person.

Ryan Court just fractured his foot, opening a spot. However, with Selsky back down, I'm sure they want him to play. Junior Lake probably needs to start hitting, though.

You're going to sleep really well tonight.....I just know it. Only if Aneury Tavarez also has a cure for a 15-month old who is teething.

Does anyone know if there's something mechanical (like the swing-path revolution going on, despite you know, Ted Williams advocating loft 60 years ago) for Lin's hot start? He's always had some talent...big bonus back in the day...but he's always been a grounder machine. Curious if he's pulling a Murphy et al.

Nice start by Ball. His K rate has bumped up this year. Still too many baserunners, but it's something.

Cosart can really lose his control in a hurry.

I think the slg.% is a temporary aberration...Ted adherence or not.

I think the slg.% is a temporary aberration...Ted adherence or not. Small sample size aberration, imo. I looked this up earlier in response to a twitter question we didn't get to on the podcast that came out today: 4/7 to 4/18: 9 g, 31 PA, .207/.258/.276 (.534) .286 BABIP 4/22 to 4/30: 6 g, 23 PA, .550/.609/1.100 (1.709) .571 BABIP (In a span of 9 days, raised his line to .347/.407/.612 (1.020)) On 4/23 alone, he raised his line from .250/.294/.313 (.607) to .306/.342/.500 (.842) by going 3/4 with a 3B and HR.

That's a textbook definition of arbitrary endpoints Yup. Only used to show the effects a few games have on the small sample size. He's gotten hot lately, but it's not like he's been tearing the cover off the ball all month, is my point - all of his power is in the last week and a half. I'm not going to let 9 days change my opinion of a guy who has never hit for any power. If he keeps it up? Sweet, we'll re-evaluate. FWIW, he was a near-miss for the top 60.

I left my phone in the car last night. That was very annoying, but thanks to my incredible perseverance, I live to see another day.
The Devers home run was a bomb, I was pumped I got to see it. And he walked too, which is big for him. He doesn't seem like he's overly aggressive or has a bad eye, so it's kind of confusing to me that he doesn't walk more. I didn't get a good sense of him in the field, but he didn't look like he wasn't fluid so that's a good sign.
Trey Ball actually looked good. Velocity was there according to the stadium radar gun (~92 on his FB). He kind of got into a lot of deep counts (seemed like his secondaries were always out of the zone), but by his standards this was a great start for him.
Danny Mars had 3 hard hit balls, but none of them found a gap.
Lin seriously looked good. He was pesky at the plate, I believe drawing a walk once, but either way he worked the pitcher in his ABs. He's a slap hitter and probably always will be, but he looked solid still. Defensively his range looked really good, he and Devers are a great left side, maybe even better than Boston's sadly.
Dunkin Donuts Park in Hartford is awesome though. It was a joke how long it took to be made, but it turned out to be arguably the nicest minor league park I've been to, although I'm partial to Hadlock.

I feel a major difference between Lin and Almanzar, though, is that the bar for Lin's offense is much, much lower. For a utilityman like Lin to improve from org depth to possible up-and-down type, he just needs to hit some to supplement his game, whereas Almanzar's only path to the majors was that he needed to really hit. Lin's obviously not a legit .250 Iso guy that he was in April, but an improvement from his career baseline of around .075 to maybe .120 or so probably pushes him ahead of the Deven Marrero and Mike Miller types.

Oh sure. Sorry, I wasn't implying a legit comparison there. Just brought Almanzar to mind - you need to look at things like where power spikes are happening. It also wasn't a great comparison because Almanzar had pop, but just not the contact skills for it to translate. I like Lin as a potential future utility guy. He can make it in that role as a slap hitter, so long as he shows enough power to not have the bat knocked out of his hands (figuratively) at Triple-A and the Majors. I just don't buy this power surge yet. I also find it interesting that after noise was made about how the Sox want to develop him as a utility player, he's playing nothing but shortstop right now. I don't know what to make of that either way. I wonder if he'll start getting more time in the outfield now with Tavarez's spot being taken by second baseman Tobias, which will free Meneses up to play more short and leaves just three outfielders on the roster (compared to 5 on each of the other minor league rosters). By the way, there are a LOT of guys in Portland and Pawtucket who are not hitting at all right now. Meneses, Monge, Longhi, DePew, Rosario, Dominguez, Butler, and Marrero all have sub-.600 OPS's.

Nice to see the organization promoting Josh Tobias to Portland AA. I saw him play in HS (summer ball) I think it was "Dirt Bags' travel program and later at Florida. I like what he brings to the Sox organization.
