Can I get just a little excited and hopeful for Beeks or is that just wasting my time? He's been great this year.

Rain delay, but Portland wins. Beeks was awesome, 8k, 2 hits, 5 innings, Devers hit a 426 ft line drive GS straight away cf and Buttrey closed last two innings, no hits/bb and K the last two hitters on 3x 100 mph heaters. Nice win.

He didn't get a win, but Mike Shawaryn with 12 Ks in 6 innings. Impressive.

A number of early season prospect performances are giving the impression that maybe our system is better than projected.

Not being a a former pitcher would you expect Buttrey's 100mph fastball to increase as the weather gets warmer, or decrease as the season drags on?

A number of early season prospect performances are giving the impression that maybe our system is better than projected. Looking at Beeks's number so far is pretty astounding. Yeah, the BABIP is unsustainably low and his BB rate is still high, but the rest is...almost shocking. His GB rate is way up, he's doubled his K-BB (to 20%!), he's getting plenty of IFFBs, and his OPS against is .520. Batters are hitting just .163. The guy is on absolute fire. A promotion to AAA can't be all that far off if this continues. Seems like he might be maneuvering himself into the spot start discussion. With Chavis, Ockimey, Anderson, Shawaryn, and Beeks (among others like Buttrey) looking good, my concerns about the system may have been overstated. Nice rebound so far.

I suppose the question with Beeks is whether you let him keep starting until he fails in the role (if he does), or fast track him as a reliever -- which is what he seems to profile as given his funky mechanics and injury history. Where he's not even on the 40-man yet I would keep him starting for the time being, just because the upside is higher there. Plus, even if the Red Sox don't see him as a starter it's very possible another team does, which keep his trade value up. As was mentioned in the Rule 5 thread there is a lot of talent eligible this year, so maximizing the value of secondary prospects like Beeks seems like the way to go.
