DSL begins tomorrow! Can't wait for our bonus babies to start playing! Oh, wait, this isn't 2018? It's been really weird to look at the DSL roster and not see a single new name. Just so everyone knows, the DSL roster on the site should be relatively close to what tomorrow's roster looks like, although they'll have a couple more moves to make to get down to 35 active. www.soxprospects.com/org.htm

This probably isn't likely, but theoretically, what would happen if they ran out of pitchers or outfielders or something? They would not be allowed to add a single player? Could they be loaned players or would they have to disband the team for the season?

Could they be loaned players or would they have to disband the team for the season? I think you can add players from elsewhere if I'm not mistaken. For example, I think you could take a player slated for the GCL and bump them down to the DSL, or we have also seen undrafted free agents sent to the DSL (Ivan Houellemont last year).

For one thing, when the punishment was handed down, they had enough players to field two DSL teams. I'm sure that was taken into consideration - with that many players, they'd have to have cut a bunch of guys or really gotten bit by the injury bug to not have enough for a single team the following year.
Also, the ban ends on July 2, so it's not an issue after that point. You're looking at having to get through a month.
Last year, when they had the two teams, things did get a little tight when they lost two position players from each team as part of the five contracts that were voided. They wound up sending a few players down from the GCL to help pick up the slack, as ramireja suggested.
I feel like if the Sox had only had a single team AND lost those five players, MLB might've let them sign players for $5k or something in order to field that single team.

Some player movement today: Bobby Poyner up to Portland. Drehoff to Portland off his glorified rehab stint. Yankory to the DL and Grover paper move make room.
Also Eddy Reynoso up from Greenville (Lowell paper move) to Salem. This is interesting because if he plays, he'd technically be making the jump from the DSL to Salem. Of course, his rostering this year makes pretty clear they think of him as a third catcher/bullpen catcher type, and he was SUPER old for the DSL last year, but it's interesting.

A couple days late but is there any insight as to why Logan Boyd got a paper move to Lowell? He's been their most consistent pitcher and has definitely improved from last year. Is this a precursor to a promotion or a DL stint? I don't get the whole paper move thing.

A couple days late but is there any insight as to why Logan Boyd got a paper move to Lowell? He's been their most consistent pitcher and has definitely improved from last year. Is this a precursor to a promotion or a DL stint? I don't get the whole paper move thing. A paper move is just a way to open up a roster spot. He could be moved back before his next start and not miss a beat. A paper move is that before Lowell starts, there are a bunch of open spots on that roster (yes, the Lowell roster is technically a thing, even before the Lowell season starts). So rather than put a guy on the DL with a fake injury (aka, the phantom DL), they'll move him onto the Lowell roster as a way to deactivate him. (Now, as to why the Red Sox don't just use the temporary inactive list (TIA) for such things is beyond my knowledge, but I feel like I've looked at other rosters and it seemed like teams did that instead of the phantom DL, at least.) Typically, you'll see a team's third catcher, perhaps, paper moved off (like Bethea and, before he was activated today and sent to Salem, Reynoso). You also see it with a relief pitcher sometimes, as with Dakota Smith and Josh Smith right now. It also makes sense to do it with a starter, who you know isn't playing for at least four games, if you need a roster spot during that time, and that's what we're likely seeing here. Boyd might skip a start or something, but it's not a reflection on him really. My guess is that Shawaryn's going up to Salem soon, perhaps even for his next start, and that Boyd will be activated at that time.

Wow. Both Salem and Greenville are 34-20...a total of 28 over! Maybe we have some hope after all.

I'd be curious about any studies comparing minor league team success and MLB team success. I'd be surprised if there is any correlation.
That said, it's always great to see the Sox affiliates doing well.

No comments on Owens being blown out of the first inning. Any intelligence on what happened?

He was bad last night. Sometimes it happens.
Good news is Maddox, Martin, and Callahan didn't allow another run.
