As the impending promotions of Rafael Devers and Michael Chavis are quite exciting to many of us, I wanted to create a poll for each to determine when we think they will promoted. (if a moderator would like to merge this with the individual topic thread, I would certainly not be against that)
I listed the dates which I believe make the most sense, but if you think another date should be added, please list the date and 'why' in the responses and I'll add it.

I'm no mind reader here, thus have no idea when the brain trust will make the moves.
Now, had you queried when would you like to see them promoted ...

I live in Winston-Salem and caught the Salem Red Sox in town this past Friday & Sunday. Chavis had a 3 run homer and generally hit the ball hard. Made good plays at third. I don't know how Boston's brass see Devers vs Chavis (they are close in age). Salem's Ockimey is playing well at first. Could Boston eventually move Devers to 1st, push Ockimey to DH and put Chavis at 3rd?

Chavis' glove was sub par at best when playing on the corner. He wasn't able to make plays that will likely happen once or twice a game in the majors. He is young still obviously, but I agree in that Devers isn't getting moved to make room for Chavis. Also read where an MLB scout was convinced Devers' glove doesn't play at third either. Appears our third base problem will carry on without extrinsic aid. Ockimey also impressed me, he seems to be playing above expectations at this point. In short they won't rush moving any of the players up as Dombrowki and his team have shown tendency to be patient with position players (refer back to Benintendi in Salem last year). Although my friend that worked at Salem said Benintendi was noticeably bored in High A and wanted to move up long before they promoted him.

Chavis is only one of these to play in Salem previous year (7 games).

What's the relevance of the list? Just how guys have hit there? Would be useful to add age (I'm not implying that would show anything one way or another, but it's a very relevant data point).

I wonder where Chavis would be drafted this year if he were in college having the year he's having now. Any thoughts?

I also recently read a Keith Law chat where he said Devers looks like a plus defender at 3rd, at least until/if he outgrows the position.

[/b] I'll go on record as disagreeing with your anonymous scout and your friend working in Salem.

I wonder where Chavis would be drafted this year if he were in college having the year he's having now. Any thoughts? This crossed my mind too. You would have to figure his stock would look something like Jake Burger's? I think he would be a mid- to late-round pick in the 1st?

At this point it's becoming ridiculous that Chavis is not at Portland. It the Sox are determined to keep Devers at AA then they should move Chavis directly to AAA. His HR total at Salem is beyond ridiculous.

I think Chavis has destroyed the idea there is no real difference between 4 and 20 in the Sox minor league prospects rankings.

I think Chavis has destroyed the idea there is no real difference between 4 and 20 in the Sox minor league prospects rankings. Right, by moving up to #4 himself by killing it. At the start of the season there was little difference, and Chavis and Ockimey have separated themselves from the pack. That's good! EDIT: One small counterpoint to the "he's going to stop getting challenged by pitchers" argument in favor of promoting him now: despite an Iso of .366 (!!!!) in June, Chavis has 13 strikeouts against only one walk. I probably would promote him after the break if it was my call, but I don't think it's insane if the Red Sox do wait a few more weeks.

There's no deeper point. Just that "wow he has hit as well/better as some guys who destroyed the first half of the CAL on their way to Portland. For a league that isn't a hitters league, there does seem to be that one guy who rakes the first half and forces a promotion. Maybe repeating Greenville made him more likely to get an early promotion, but he's certainly forced the issue.
