Here are my "super wicked early speculative gut-check predictions" for the 2017 signing season. I don't have any inside info behind this yet, these predictions are just based on gut feel and years of history of making these projections. These initial guesstimates have usually been decently solid projections in years past, but they're just that - projections with a significant amount of possible variability. Feedback is welcome and appreciated. I will update as more info comes in and as opinions evolve. Top Ten Rounds (entire amount counts towards bonus cap)Round, Overall Pick, Player, Projected Bonus1 Tanner Houck $2,614,500 2 Cole Brannen $850,000 3 Brett Netzer $400,000 4 Jake Thompson $600,000 5 Alex Scherff $900,000 6 Zach Schellinger $230,000 7 Tyler Esplin $160,000 8 Zach Sterry $10,000 9 Tanner Nishioka $10,000 10 Jordan Wren $10,000 After 10th round, above $125K (first $125,000 does not count towards bonus cap)14 Aaron Perry $225,000 After 10th round, possible $125,000 or less signs (count $0 towards cap) 11. For a team drafting at 24, I was very impressed with the overall quality of this draft.
Not sure how many will sign, but if we get at least the top seven signed, it will be a huge win for us.

Well, we can't sign the top 7 unless we sign 8,9, & 10 for below slot, too. Otherwise agree. Some nice talent to add to our system

Hopefully this plus a nice July 2nd haul will help restock the system.

Kory Behenna "I want to thank God first and foremost for the opportunities He has given me," Behenna says. "Baseball is a game which has been very dear to my heart. It has been a dream of mine to play professionally since I was five years old. For this dream to come true, words can't express the joy I have. I can't thank Wingate University enough, along with coach Gregory and the staff, for all the time and commitment they have poured into my three years and the help they have provided me to this point. Roll 'Dogs!" wingatebulldogs.com/news/2017/6/14/baseball-kory-behenna-drafted-by-boston-red-sox-in-25th-round-of-mlb-draft.aspx

Michael Osinski on Instagram (I know):
I can't explain how excited and grateful I am that the Boston Red Sox are providing me the opportunity to begin my professional baseball career. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years!

Lukas Young "I want to thank God for giving me the talents I have today and my family for being there with me throughout this journey," said Young. "I would also like to thank my coaches at Bishop Community College for giving me the opportunity to play after high school and for Coach Jacobs and Coach Seymour at UM for giving me the chance to play after junior college. "We are very proud of Lukas," said University of Mobile baseball head coach Mike Jacobs. "He worked really hard last summer before he came to UM. After he got here he did a great job in the classroom, as well as on the field. His work ethic was great. He was an example to our entire team. Lukas was a fierce competitor on the field, he loved to compete against the best. He was also an encouragement to our team when he was not on the mound. We will miss him, but God has other plans for Lukas and we are okay with that." www.umobilerams.com/article/2591.php

One thing I'll throw out there based on something we've seen a few times over the last few years. Around draft time, a team will ask a potential draftee "If it comes down to it, would you sign for X Dollars?" The player says yes and the team drafts him. The player then thinks they have a deal in place even though paperwork isn't signed yet. In actuality, the club just wanted to know the range a player wants, and signings won't go down until other signings play out. Sometimes the player doesn't end up signing.
So while some draftees are declaring themselves part of the organization already, it's evidence that they will likely sign, but I wouldn't give it credence that it's a done deal.

Can someone clarify the bonus signing limits. For example, can the Red Sox go up to 5% over the combined top 10 slots (e.g. $5,396,800) and thus have another $269,000 to spend within those limits? Also, hopefully they can get Brannen and Netzer for "deeper discounts" which would free up some more money to guys like Durden, Dearden, etc.

Of the late round flyers, I'd love to see the Sox throw a little extra to sign up Oraj Anu. When I read the thing about him impressing scouts, then disappearing back to home schooling in the Bahamas, I was intrigued. The video shows an athletic looking kid who looks comfortable swinging from either side of the plate. The thing I found that is most interesting is his parents. Father played football at Miami U. Kid's mom though was an elite sprinter who was on multiple Olympic teams for Bahamas. She claims the kid runs the 60 in 6.5 seconds on a bad day and can run it in 6.2 seconds! If that's true, at 6'2 220, that is freak show level athletic ability. www.prepbaseballreport.com/news/FL/Speed-Is-In-Oraj-Anus-DNA-1296438750

Not a lone example either. Trainers, possibly parents also can have these kids do nothing but train to hit, run 60's.. Then know little else about the game. Beltre was like that. Hitting meatballs from a BP pitcher isn't like in a competitive environment and I'd be wary of this more than another who has.

Anu was a Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American (and a first-team Florida All-Regional) so I'm not sure that's applicable here. No idea whatsoever what he'd be looking for as a bonus, but with his athletic profile he is the type who could improve his draft status quite a bit by enrolling in school.

Hitting meatballs from a BP pitcher isn't like in a competitive environment and I'd be wary of this more than another who has. Engel Beltre was an international signee, so the comparison isn't really apt. Beltre was also a useful signing in that he was used as part of a trade with the Rangers, so I don't agree with the premise really either (we can leave out the part where the trade was for Eric Gagne, right?)

Not trying to make a big stink about this, but I'm seeing the words "blessed" and "God" pop up an absolute ton. Its almost as if guys needed to have 60 grade religious identification to be drafted by us this year. Whatever floats your boat though, I'm not hating.
