I wonder if you could get a shortstop and fill the hole at 3rd with XB whether that would work? Only looking at a short term fix. I know XB did not adjust well when he was moved the last time. That would leave you with a very unhappy Xander who'd have to transition to a position he hasn't played in a while and wasn't that great at. They actually need offense anyways. Just find a competent fielding 3b (which would be an improvement) who can swing the bat. I understand totally on where you are coming from. Just threw it out as a possibility. I read sometime back near the beginning of June where there was talk of moving, OUCH, Blake S to 3rd.

You are in 1st in the division and second in the league behind Houston. You have sales and no one else in the division has anything like that. The bullpen has been great. Is there a real reason to make a drastic move for a player that would either push us over the cap or have us lose another farm team player of quality? Chris Sale, not sales. I've seen that so many times and have no idea why anyone does it.

You win, I give up. Even though I'd only trade Castillo for Gurriel, let's trade a #3 pitcher for him instead and then worry about finding another starter later when every team in the league is looking for one. Because the odds of Fister being as good as Porcello for the rest of the season is a sure thing. That's why he was just released. Maybe we should throw in a little more too, given that Houston like him so much they don't even use him as an every day player. And then maybe Porcello could beat us in the playoffs. If they trade Castillo and pick up a significant portion of his salary, does that count against the lux tax with him not on the 40 man? If not it could be a way to leverage a package with him in it.

That's a good technical question. I think if Houston added Castillo to the 40 man roster, the salary given to the Astros would count against the Sox. I can't see the Sox adding that much salary to such deal because Castillo makes 2-3 million a year more than Gurriel and they both have 4 years remaining, including this one.

I expect Devers to move up to Pawtucket after the double a all star game. If all goes well, he will probably get a September call up to Boston and should be the starting 3rd baseman for 2018.
In my mind that means any 3rd baseman we trade for should be a 2017 rental type player only.

Well theoretically, you could bring in a Lowrie or even *gasp* Perralta to platoon to put Devers in the best position to succeed once he's called up.

Its kinda funny that Gurriel just destroyed the Yankees right after the silly Porcello for Gurriel discussion.

Asdrubal Cabrera could be a value pick-up if anyone is convinced he can play third. The fact that he can also play SS (welllll) and 2nd means some guys could get days off, as well. Not sure what Mets would accept but I would think since he's a FA after this year ($8.5M option, $2M club option) it's not extravagant.

His downside is that he's an innings eater, so that's a valuable player. Isnt his downside also what he makes a year, tying up assets that could be spent elsewhere?

What do you think they would have to spend to replace him? Even if you are just trying to replace him with an innings eating 3/4 type... 12-15m? So how much are you freeing up to spend elsewhere?

You're either.... 1) spending that $22M to replace him. Samardzija got 5 years and $90M. Mike Leake got 5 years and $75M. Porcello is being paid the going rate, so you aren't in for a discount if you replace him externally. 2) trading him, not signing a pitcher to replace him, and instead leaning on Eduardo Rodriguez/Brian Johnson. Way too many injury risks (Pomeranz and his elbow, Eduardo has gotten hurt a few times, Price is a ticking time bomb) for me to endorse this approach. And they don't have to get rid of Porcello to be able to afford one or two extensions. Which is what they ought to be trying to do.

Just a useful one to pitch 6 innings and get you to your pen. I'd be comfortable trading Porcello if Price finishes the season healthy.

It's kind of nice that Lin has given the Red Sox about a month to really determine what they need and that it's no longer a disaster that's destroying the team and leading to an inevitable panic move. They can stay calm until the deadline.

As someone who likes Prado it doesn't make sense. He's due over 30 million more on his contract and Devers will be there next season. I like the Frazier idea much better unless Dave is going to get creative with a bigger contract with Miami. Just don't see it.

I will say that the Sox could afford to go past the trade deadline with what they got at third base (maybe they even add Johnny Peralta soon). Todd Frazier will be there all August if you don't get him by the non waiver deadline (unless the Yankees get Frazier first).
The only guy they'd risk losing out on is Jed Lowrie most likely.

The Sox would be the sixth team for Prado, who has generally been a quality contributor throughout his career. That hasn’t been the case this year, though, as Prado has slashed an uninspiring .270/.302/.385 during an injury-affected, 129-plate appearance campaign. Unfortunately for first-place Boston, the numbers that its third basemen have posted this year pale in comparison to Prado’s lackluster output. The combination of Deven Marrero, Josh Rutledge, Pablo Sandoval, Marco Hernandez, Tzu-Wei Lin and Steve Selsky has batted an ugly .231/.288/.327 en route the majors’ third-worst fWAR at the position (minus-0.4). Among that group, only Marrero and Lin are both healthy and at the major league level at the moment, while Selsky is at Triple-A. Of course, the Red Sox have a much more prominent third base option in the minors in Double-A standout Rafael Devers, Baseball America’s sixth-ranked prospect, but they’re not eager to promote the 20-year-old yet. While the hot corner has caused headaches for Boston, its bullpen has been a strength. The unit entered Sunday ranked third in baseball in ERA and fifth in fWAR, with each of Craig Kimbrel, Joe Kelly, Matt Barnes, Heath Hembree, Fernando Abad and Blaine Boyer having logged production ranging from respectable to great. Phelps would make the unit all the more formidable (but would also join Kimbrel, Kelly, Barnes, Hembree and Boyer in providing another yet another righty option), though acquiring him isn’t going to be easy. www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/red-sox-interested-in-martin-prado-david-phelps-package.html

I really don't understand the Prado interest. Not that he's an awful player. I just don't really see the fit. The Red Sox are supposed to be trying to stay under the cap or why else would they have balked so much at spending the money on Encarnacion if going over the cap didn't matter?
It's hard to imagine they'd go over the cap to spend money on Martin Prado who would not be a regular for them come May 2018. He'd be an expensive bench piece. I get that the Marlins would eat some of the money, but you figure if they're willing to do that and they're willing to deal Phelps, then the Sox are going to pay up with talent.
I'd be worried that Chavis is gone in a deal like this, probably along with Hembree (not that I'd mourn his departure).
Phelps is ok as a pitcher but his control isn't the greatest. He's not somebody I'd hand the 8th inning over to and say all is well. He'd probably be an upgrade over Hembree but with his price tag I'm not sure how much. I wouldn't expect Phelps to give the Sox what Carson Smith gave Seattle in 2015 or what Thornburg gave the Brewers last year.
Honestly I think Todd Frazier at 3b would be a better fit for what the Red Sox need, a 3b power bat who won't saddle them with financial responsibilities next season. I'd rather the Sox go after Frazier than singles hitting Prado.

There is talk of trying to get Miami to eat some of Prado's salary but that doesn't seem to be Loria's style. He throws nickles around like they were man hole covers.

Yeah don't see the logic in this deal either. Third base is not even a big issue anymore. Lin and Marrero are fine as a platoon for the rest of the year. You dont need an all star caliber player at every position. If anything more bullpen depth would be nice. But we don't need to get desparate either.
