Yes, Lawrie can play all infield positions, bat anywhere in the lineup, and he is a vet drafted by Sox. I don't think it will cost near what most people are suggesting. Maybe trade Price to a contender and then make a package for Gray and Lawrie.

I'd hesitate to trade players like Hernandez. He's really good depth to have at AAA or on the bench when he's not out for the season. They don't have enough of those guys to begin with. A trade for Lowrie would leave the Red Sox with the following 3b options for 2018 (assuming option is picked up): Jed Lowrie Rafael Devers Pablo Sandoval Brock Holt Marco Hernandez Tzu-Wei Lin Deven Marrero The Red Sox will have to move at least 1-2 of those guys as it is. 2018 depth isn't an issue. I don't think Pablo will be a option past this year. It'll be beneficial to the Sox if he isn't a option actually.

But one of the analysts suggested Price was not happy in Boston & they think he may opt out after next year. ??

Brought this up in the GDT, but I think Lowrie would be a great fit for this team, unlike Nunez (who can't move anymore).
I'm not sure that I trust Pedrioa being healthy for most of the year or even into the playoffs.
If we are talking realistic trade options for this team, then the Sox should be thinking about Lowrie.
If you traded Nunez to the A's, you would be taking on 2 more million dollars AAV wise. You could stay under the 237 if you traded for Lowrie.
My trade-
Sox get Lowrie
A's get Nunez and Swihart
Swihart gets a fresh start in Oakland, where he could develop as a catcher. Boston's bench improves. Good insurance policy for Pedrioa. Better option than Nunez. No prospects traded in the Sox depleted system. Good all around deal, I think.

If they sell Nunez at the deadline this might turn in to a solid haul for Lowrie. But with that said I hold out for more.

Lowrie's fallen off significantly in the past month or so. Since May 7 he's hitting .216/.304/.309. I'll pass on giving up assets for Lowrie - I'd honestly rather play Holt at second.

That would pretty easily take us over 237.

Lowrie is a fine player, but yeah, I'd rather we just go with Holt, and if we need an extra infielder, call up Lin. In fact, I'd much prefer that than continuing to roster Nunez.

That would pretty easily take us over 237. Eh, it's $6M (since it's a club option, it wasn't included in the prior AAV calc for the first 3 years of the deal, I believe). Even if it were an issue, I'm sure you could get Oakland to eat however much of it is necessary to make the deal work. To me, the bigger issue is that it's not worth giving up assets to make it happen when Holt might be just as good going forward.

My problem probably is more with Nunez than Holt. Holt is fine in a spot if he isn't getting too many at bats and is in his usual utility type of role. The other problem is the health of Pedrioa.
Nunez can't play defense anywhere anymore. He hasn't been worthy of a roster spot to this point.
Maybe the Sox just DFA Nunez and bring up Lin, but one year of Lowrie doesn't sound all that bad either.
I don't want to get rid of Holt's at bats. He'd get plenty even if Lowrie was here I bet (with the way Cora is spreading out the load throughout the roster). The problem is taking away at bats from Nunez, who is killing the Sox this year.

Lin is hitting in AAA this year and is an excellent defensive player. It's a shame they have 3 LHH utility guys including Marco Hernandez. It seems like Nunez is starting to hit a little more so you could live with his lack of defense while he's hitting. But if he never really gets back completely, I'm more interested in Lin than doing something like trading Lin for Lowrie.

A week later, now .205/.286/.308 since May 7. He's turned back into a pumpkin. Now a 2B-only, I see no reason to give up any asset for Lowrie unless there is a significant injury to the Holt/Nunez/Lin group.
