Since Doug Fister was claimed off waivers and is now part of the organization, what is the sentiment on him?

I'll take it for depth. Glad we have him to fall back on

I'm just glad he didn't cost us Chavis, Mata, Cedrola and a PTBNL (Alex Scherff).

Cotillo reporting he's being added right to the MLB roster. Presumably Velazquez will get optioned.

Not bad for a 5th starter. Don't think he'll be all that good but should be fine until Rodriguez or Johnson get back.

Not that Fister is a superstar here, but I'm glad Dombrowski picked him up. He's good depth to have. I was hoping when the Angels let him go, Dombrowski would pick him back up again.

I'll honestly be surprised if he's better than Velazquez, but I guess it's better to have more mediocre depth.

I'll honestly be surprised if he's better than Velazquez, but I guess it's better to have more mediocre depth. Exactly. At this moment they are an injury from either having Kendrick or even worse Owens start a game. Fister prevents them from that. Don't know if he's better than Velazquez at this point but I'd think he'd be better than either Kendrick or Owens? At the moment the Sox have Price who is either still injured or coming off an injury, Pomeranz who is trying not to get reinjured, and Porcello who could use a stint on the DL just to take a breather. Not exactly the most stable of rotations right now. And we don't know how E-Rod will come back either.

what is the amount against the luxury tax? Prorated Major league minimum? He's making $1.75M. It's prorated though, and it's only while he's in the majors because it's a split contract.

What I thought was interesting was when Dave Dombrowski mentioned that Fister was a bullpen candidate when Eduardo Rodriguez comes back. I'm willing to bet he'd already be a better option than Matt Barnes in the 8th.

Fister is a 6'8" guy with a good sinker who doesn't walk people. He doesn't miss a ton of bats and the contact he's given up has started going a lot farther the last three years, but he seems like the sort of arm who could be a real asset in the bullpen. He pitched pretty well in 17 innings out of the pen for the Nats in 2015, and given that it wouldn't be seen as a demotion anymore he'd probably be more excited about that sort of role now.

Actually the issue is that even though he doesn't walk many, he's doubled his walk rate. With his profile, having a low walk profile isn't enough, you need to dot the lower part of the zone and walk practically nobody. Still, he proved last year he can produce (1.1 WAR) despite a decline. There will be days where the ball goes to the right spots, and says where it's anywhere but. The end game probably outdoes Velazquez, Owens, and maybe even Johnson (who should take notes from Fister's career, because despite not being a GB guy, he still has to neutralize BBs to keep men off the bases).

Wowww the haiku is killing it. This forum was missing poetry. I know we have a plethora of beautiful minds here... I better not be the only haiku artist here over the next few weeks. James was right there, so I know for a minimum he's got it in him.
