I hope Johnson is beyond his medical issues - he is showing this year that he can be a fine ML starter - he needs to catch a break.

If Johnson, Mata, and Kent do well today they should be promoted.

No way Mata should be going anywhere yet.

Too early for Mata to be promoted. Yes he's been fantastic this year but it's still only 50 innings of low A ball

If Johnson, Mata, and Kent do well today they should be promoted. Nobody is being promoted based on how well or poor they pitch today. There's no place for Johnson in Boston right now, his only promotion possibility. Mata will be in Greenville all year. He's 18, pitching well, but not dominating the league. No need to rush him. Kent, well, he's an org guy. He's pitched ok this year, but not great - his 2nd year in Salem. He could be promoted if they think he can handle Portland and if they feel they need another pitcher in Portland. But there's nothing in profile or performance that screams he needs to be promoted.

Pedro Castellanos with another multi-hit game in the GCL. Raises his average to .379.
Everlouis Lozada's two hits bring him above .300. 18 year old switch hitter.
Rehabbing Jagger Rusconi and Blake Swihart combine for 0 for 9 with 5 Ks.

Extension to that question: the short scouting report on this site says he has a lot of swing and miss in his game. He struck out in 9.5% of his plate appearances in the DSL and lowered that to 6.3% in the GCL this year. Yes, it's rookie ball and the pitchers aren't advanced by any measure in the minors, but that's still not a lot of swing and miss. I'm assuming that the report comes from firsthand knowledge of the player in some sort of training camp?

Actually you're right, since there is only one more month of minor league bball, it's kind of useless at this point. They might as well wait until next year, and I was thinking Kent to the 'pen with Portland, which is what he'll probably be in the big leagues. But if there is no place for Johnson then why is Doug Fister still in the rotation?

Anyone know why Carson Smith was pulled so fast? Johnson's game looked good in the box. Ball...yikes!

Mata going through a rough stretch. 4.50 ERA in July and then 4 ER in 3 innings tonight. And tonight he had 2 BBs, 2 WPs, and 2 HBPs to only one strikeout. I don't know if his arm is getting tired or something, but maybe he needs a skipped turn in the rotation to get his game back to where it was in May and June. That being said, he's still a baby compared to everyone else in the league and miles ahead of where he should be. So I'm not worried in the long run.

So Tvker Tubbs pitched the best inning for Greenville tonight. And he didn't even play the field. I don't think I can remember the last time I saw a position player that wasn't already in the game come in to pitch. But why tax a bullpen when you're down by that much I guess.

Ockimey goes deep again. We have some serious power hitters in our system, what do we do with Ockimey and Chavis? I feel like one needs to be traded

Trey Ball stat line tonight
4 IP, 12 hits, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 Ks
Is this guy ever going to get it? Maybe try him out in the bullpen. His velocity is good, and he has a decent second pitch.

Trey Ball just can't pitch. They tried him in the bullpen in the AFL and he struggled badly there too. I think Tim friggen Tebow got a hit off him in that league.
They should just convert him to be a position player to save his baseball career.

Cherington really made some bone head moves back in the day.

They should just convert him to be a position player to save his baseball career. After five seasons (four discounting his short stint in GCL), it would be difficult to now pick up a bat and a glove. I realize he was a good OF prospect as well as pitcher when he was drafted but he's lost too much development time. Williams Jerez, who went the other way, at least has developed into a fair prospect. But he started earlier in his career. Better to trade him to a team with a coaching staff that can spot something in his delivery and has a plan to help him succeed.

Ball was ranked right around where he was drafted so saying no one liked him is just flat out wrong. I think we should stop disguising our 20/20 hindsight as if anyone had any actual foresight into the players in 2013. He busted, as do many players, lots of players, lots of 1st rounders, and even lots of top 10 picks do more often than not. No one here who disliked the pick traveled around the country and personally scouted the top 30 draftees.

In any sport, drafting young kids is a crapshoot. Baseball might be the most random and toughest of them all. The Sox' 2013 draft didn't work out. Overall though, the org's done a pretty good job at it. It would have been nice to have picked Judge. Bellinger as well, but he was picked in the 4th round. Every other team missed out in the 2011 draft in regards to the our 5th round pick. I view it as with two highish picks we ended up with Benintendi. I'm good with that.
