Pay both of them. This is the Boston Red Sox. We'll have to have a debate in the offseason about this. I am leaning towards that it's not a given we're going over the luxury tax threshold again with the new CBA rules. Fair enough.

I don't think you can afford 2 - 30 mill/year pitchers. Plus there is Bryce Harper to think about. I'd be okay with it. No to Harper. He's made for New York anyways. They'll love that a-hole up there. Come on, he would be perfect for the city of Boston.

Realistically, would pay him that? Dodgers, Yanks, Cubs. Not sure who else (Nats, Angels). If a GM added another year on to it, even if the total is same, maybe. Just don't know who else could be in play at 31 mill. When is the last time a player had an option out that he they didn't end up with more money? If he's hurt we are screwed, if he's healthy next year that is a gift to the Sox teams down the road There are a lot of times that players don't opt out because they know they won't make more money. Plus the opt-out isn't incredibly common yet.

The problem with Harper is whether he's a 1.4 win player like in 2014 or a 9.5 win player like in 2015. I'm not paying for a 9.5 win player. He hasn't been anywhere near as good as he was in 2015 in any other year.

Ok, I thought Kelly got lucky getting out of the 7th, but c'mon John, this is the 8th inning of a winnable game.

Barnes on the road is like Tazawa vs Toronto.

I know there was some incredulous reaction when I suggested it, but I do wonder if Bruce would be better thanHolt at first. The albatross contracts they have just wouldn't let them do it I guess (along with a not insignificant roster crunch).

I've been assuming that Harper was going to NY for about 2 years now, but now I'm not as sure because of what I wrote above. They need starting pitching going forward with 2 of their starters close to the end.

7 pitches, 1 strike for Barnes. Yeah, his new delivery makes him just like Andrew Miller, except the one from tonight, not the one that's worth $15 million a year.

So Workman unavailable, or Reed, or possibly Kimbrel - creating a domino effect?
