Hopefully he does better than the 5.96 ERA and .916 OPS allowed that he did there last year. His Lowell numbers went up this year compared to last, but hopefully his Greenville numbers don't do the same.

Ball thru 2 innings has allowed only an infield hit plus a walk. His FB has been 88-91 touching 92. Chavis and Ockimey both walked in first AB. Each is solidly built especially from the waist down. Chavis is short-waisted... looks 2/3 legs.O-0 after 2.

His velocity hasn't improved at all since high school, very disappointing

Ball gave up 3 hits and 3 runs in the 4th thanks in part to an error by Ockimey when he didn't get the glove down on a medium ground ball right at him. Ball was 90-93 in the 4th and hit 94 in a clean 5th with 2 Ks. His curve has showed very good bite and deception at 74-78. Chavis with his second walk so looks to have good patience.
Mars chokes up and appears to separate his hands on the bat.

I saw pitches mostly 88-94 range and definite curves with sharp break 74-78. The FB was predominant in use. There were a small number of pitches 84-86. I assumed that they were cutters but perhaps they were changeups. If so, there was not great separation from the FB. I don't recall particular downward movement or effectiveness of the pitch. Ball walked a small number. Most misses were with the FB high...but not unduly. Today he was mainly a FB/curve guy. Chavis was 1/2 with 2 walks and a SO on a 3-2 FB. His hit was a LD single to deeper right center. He was being pitched carefully and did not expand the zone. Some guys have an aura and he is one. Josh Ock had a pretty LD single over third 2 hops to the left fielder.

Thanks for the report Sarasoxer. Alex Speir last reported Ball hasn't showed enough consistency to be protected. I'm hopeful his next (last?) start is real good, making three in a row so they can think about it. I still like the increasing velocity through the start, the breaking ball and remaining projection in his build. If he can work on the cutter or change the goal is to become a sort of Drew Pomeranz type.

No doubt Pomeranz is much further along, however some similarities- 6'6" Lefthanders with repertoire focused on fastball/curve and took time to develope as starters. Ball would need to put on a bit more weight and get a tick or two added, plus sharpen secondaries. Not likely, but possible- I hope they keep him.

I do as well and I hope he develops and I hope he makes the 40 man cut but, at this point, Pomeranz is too high a ceiling. Anything is possible but that seems too unlikely.

Velasquez with another strong outing; one hit over seven IP to get the win. Next start should be in Boston.
