I know this is recency bias since we all just seen him hit a homerun against "Nasty Craig" Kimbrel but I didn't even realize how good of a season this guy has had until I looked up the stats.
He's a guy that has broke out big-time offensively. He could easily hit 40 or more homeruns this year. Smoak could be a 5 fWAR player. He isn't a good defender with a -2 DRS and he's had below average grades at first base in the last too. Smoak won't kill you there and he could be a perfect bat to pursue in the off-season.
Due to the new CBA rules, I would hesitate to give him more than 50 million dollars (he's going to be offered a qualifying offer, no doubt) but I'd be perfectly comfortable giving him a 3 year 48 million dollar deal of I was Dombrowski. He's a clear upgrade over Moreland.
Thoughts?

how comfortable are people with this being a true break-out year instead of a one-off outlier???
edited to add: just looked up his contract...he's not going to be a free agent until after 2019...so moot discussion

His contract runs through 2018 and the Jays have a club option on him for 2019. He looks to finally be a good player after making some meaningful changes to his plate approach and swing, but not sure how you think we could get him.

I thought he was up after this year. He's been in the league for what seems like forever and I didn't think he had any control left. My mistake.

He may be an option, but does not look like he is available. There is some question in my mind about whether this is just a totally off year for several keys players on offense and that next year they bounce back. Still does not look like they have the home run hitter that they need. BUT, who is available? And what would we have to give up to get them? Does Dave start moving any of the young guys who has contracts coming up to get someone? Interesting thought. Doubt it happens.

I thought he was up after this year. He's been in the league for what seems like forever and I didn't think he had any control left. My mistake. He was so mediocre before this year that his free agency jackpot was a 2 year $8.2 million contract with a team option with some performance bonuses. Pretty ridiculously cheap contract. Toronto could trade him for a pretty huge haul.
