Vazquez really is an asset behind the plate. He stole two or three (very high-leverage) strikes in that inning. All-Star next year. He has quietly broken out in a huge way.

Man that game was way harder than the score would make you think. Fantastic win!

He's an interesting player, just a diamond rat who focuses on getting better by studying everything. The improved hitting is not a big shock, he is a catcher after all. I wouldn't be surprised if he's keeping a book on all the pitchers, what they throw and when. That would be very useful at the plate as well as behind it. He seems to have a plan and as jmei points out his framing is exceptional.

Pomeranz is tied for lead league in wins. His numerous quality start performances is the reason for this. What a solid rock he is in a rotation.

I also think it's helpful that he splits nearly half his time with Leon (Vazquez has appeared in 84 games as a catcher this year; Leon has appeared in 77 as a catcher). Catchers tend to wear down as the season goes along. He's in mid-season form in September. And they will prolong his career this way. I really like that the Red Sox are splitting catching duties like this.

They're lucky to have two catchers who are above replacement level. They might be able to squeeze 2 wins out of the combination this season. That's OK. Not great but OK.

My god Wade Miley blows at pitching. To think the Sox got Carson Smith for him is a miracle.

Excellent game. I should know. I was there. Benintendi was roping the ball. Pedroia was making solid contact. Vazquez had another no doubter HR.
Farrell's moves had me scratching my head. Couldn't figure out why he lead off with Bogaerts or had the three lefties in a row.
I would have went to Scott when Olson was up in the 6th but Farrell stuck with Pomeranz who struck him out.
I didn't understand why Farrell gave Workman such a short rope. Then he puts Scott in against a guy who would obviously be pinch-hit for so Scott has to face the righty, but Farrell got away with it when Scott got the K. Then he used Addison Reed afterwards, but if the game was close I couldn't help but wonder who'd pitch the 8th. By then he had boxed himself in with a full inning of Kelly.
Fortunately Benintendi put the game away by time Kelly came in. Also fortunately, Khris Davis must have been unavailable to pinch-hit.
They needed to win the game and they did, but the lead of NY is still to precarious, so they have to keep taking series, against TB, and Baltimore who the Sox struggle mightily against.

Can't say the Mariners look so bad trading 5 1/3 innings of relief work over two seasons for 350 of a tick above replacement level. Only 112 of those innings were for Seattle. The remaining 54 innings of 2016 and 149 innings thus far have been for Baltimore (and even worse than Seattle which was worse than his time in Boston) Technically, we have to value the 112 innings for Seattle plus the value of Ariel Miranda, who Seattle got from Baltimore. I can't say that I shed any tears about giving up Webster and De La Rosa for Miley, but I also can't say that I wish he was on our team now, so there is definitely time over the next 3 years for the trade to look better for us. And if there's any difference between Elias and Aro, that also has to be factored in.

Miranda has actually been better than I realized, despite the problem with home runs. Notably better than Miley, and in about the same number of innings. I'm guessing the Mariners would prefer to have Miranda over Smith.

They're already at 3.3 (2.6 for Vazquez and 0.7 for Leon). B-Ref doesn't include pitch framing, where Vazquez has 1.2 and Leon has 0.7. They're also adding 0.5 to Leon and subtracting it from Vazquez based on catcher ERAs, which isn't statistically supportable.

Now I know why Khris Davis wasn't available - he wasn't there - he just became a first time father - congratulations to the Davises. And I was remiss to say that Pomeranz was his usual bend but don't break self. The A's certainly helped with the type of baserunning the Red Sox have done. The A's ran into two crucial outs when Pomeranz was struggling and the A's were making solid contact.
