I don't know if that's the Sox field, but yeah, a handful of American kids have been down there the last few weeks playing and staying at the Academy. Houck, Hanna, Scherff, Schellenger

Yeah. FYI, it's the lead story on the News page, so you can get there that way.

According to Alex Speier, it looks like Sam Travis is getting some time in LF in the Dominican Winter League. Being able to play LF could greatly increase his chances of a future bench role if his power doesn't develop enough to profile as an everyday 1B option.

Chandler Shepherd doing some good things in Caribbean League. 1.84 ERA in 14.2 innings across three games. 15 Ks and only 2 walks.

Wow. Very strange. He's only made 3 starts as a pro, and at least two were bullpen games where he went first.

Wow. Very strange. He's only made 3 starts as a pro, and at least two were bullpen games where he went first. Only thing I can think of is that it may have been a suggestion (perhaps from Bannister or the like) based on how he scouts. He's not the typical reliever who has elite velo and one plus (or flashing plus) secondary pitch. Instead, he is more of an average velocity guy with 4 average-ish pitches in his arsenal, so it may have simply been a suggestion based on his stuff.

To clarify here, where I get more than 140 characters - Dominican League teams release active rosters each week. For whatever reason, Swihart's not on the roster for his team this week.

The recent roundup for fall and winter leagues had an interesting point on Pedro Castellanos. .304/.373/.489 During the Venezuelan Development League. Looking forward to seeing him in Greenville this upcoming year so we can see what kind of prospect he really is.
The important thing to see for Castellanos is which scouting report is accurate: the one before this year that said he couldn’t hit (nothing against whoever wrote that if it was wrong, difficult to judge international kids when you can’t see them 1sthand) or the guy that hit almost .400 in the GCL this year. A full year of exposure in Greenville will give us the answer.

FWIW, the Liga Paralela is a bit beneath Castellanos at this point. It's typically more for DSL-level guys with some GCL guys peppered in. He's not drastically above the league, but I'd expect him to be dominating the way he is. Also, due to the financial crisis in Venezuela, the Liga Paralela is a shell of what it used to be - there are only six teams and I think they're even playing less often. The fewer teams also doesn't mean consolidation of talent or anything - there are two teams tied to MLB organizations and four teams tied to Venezuelan League teams, one of which is a hybrid team (and has been every year). Previously, there were like 12 teams in the league or something, iirc, so this year is even more of a crapshoot as to what performance there actually means.
That said, your point stands and I agree completely (except for the "couldn't hit" exaggeration of course). He was on the shortest list of guys we needed to get a look at during Instructs.

Was he a player to watch before the year, though? The pre-2017 scouting report combined with the video from spring training showed a hit tool with a lot of flaws. He’s clearly an improved prospect now, but what was the point of view on him coming into this past season?

Was he a player to watch before the year, though? Sure, to a degree. He was in and out of the back third of the SP rankings.

So Rusney Castillo (Caguas) and Jeremy Rivera (Mayaguez) are the only guys who'll be playing in PR that I've seen so far, but not all of the rosters have been released - just 2 of the 5 plus some top names in Caguas.
Aneury Tavarez's team in the DR didn't make the playoffs, and he wasn't selected in the playoff redistribution draft they have (kind of a neat concept - the four playoff teams can pick players from the teams that didn't advance), so he signed with a team in Mexico for the last week of their regular season and the playoffs. Interestingly, it's the same team as Quiroz's.
Looking quickly, Puerto Ricans in the Sox org who we could see down there include Christian Vazquez (although I could see him taking the winter off), Andre Colon, Angel Gonzalez, Luis Torres, Alan Marrero, Alberto Schmidt, Ivan Houellemont, Yomar Valentin, Joseph Monge. I'd presume we'll at least see Monge and perhaps a couple of the catchers (Marrero and Schmidt strike me as guys who'll be on rosters but not play much, whereas Vazquez would definitely start).

I apologize for not having video or a link that I've been trying to fine since last night. Last night on NESN Red Sox live from Fort Myers it showed Blake Swihart walking out of a building in short sleeves and shorts and in the batting cage and he didn't look all that bad. If anyone finds it and wants to see Swihart he's at the 21:00 and 24.38 mark on the show
