Some of the Ground Rules are applied loosely in here, as we understand that there is a tendency to want to react (or overreact) to every play of a Sox game with one line reactionary posts. Damn Yankees just won't go away. We need a 2016 performance from Porcello to help the cause.

Tonight a must win. Don't like the other two matchups. Want 2/3 here but I don't think it's in the cards. Have to think Pedroia will rest for 1 maybe 2?

Magic number is 14 for the division, 8 for the playoffs (relevant team currently LAA, but Texas is a game behind them and KC two behind).
WC standings are a trip, for those who haven't been following:
Wild Card Teams W L PCT WCGB WCE # L10 STRK LAST GAME NEXT GAME NY Yankees 78 65 .545 +4.0 - 7-3 W3 9/11 @ TB, W 5-1 9/12 @ TB, 7:10 PM Minnesota 74 69 .517 - - 4-6 L2 9/10 @ KC, L 3-11 9/12 vs SD, 8:10 PM LA Angels 73 70 .510 1.0 19 5-5 W1 9/10 @ SEA, W 5-3 9/12 vs HOU, 10:07 PM Texas 72 71 .503 2.0 18 6-4 W1 9/11 vs SEA, W 5-3 9/12 vs SEA, 8:05 PM Kansas City 71 72 .497 3.0 17 5-5 L1 9/11 vs CWS, L 3-11 9/12 vs CWS, 1:15 PM Baltimore 71 73 .493 3.5 16 3-7 L5 9/11 @ TOR, L 3-4 9/12 @ TOR, 7:07 PM Seattle 71 73 .493 3.5 16 5-5 L2 9/11 @ TEX, L 3-5 9/12 @ TEX, 8:05 PM Tampa Bay 71 74 .490 4.0 15 4-6 L1 9/11 vs NYY, L 1-5 9/12 vs NYY, 7:10 PM Basically, 11 of the 15 AL teams are in the playoff hunt. This is a parity fan's wet dream.

Bogaerts SS, Pedroia DH, Benintendi LF, Betts RF, Moreland 1B, Devers 3B, Holt 2B, Leon C, Bradley Jr. CF, Sale LHP. 4 games in a row for Pedrioa. No Hanley. Still don't know why Holt is ahead of JBJ in the batting order and I don't know why the Sox won't at least try out Lin over Holt.

Even Deven Marrero is a better hitter than Holt this year as well as a far better fielder. How long can they possibly give him to try to start hitting whatsoever? He's not hitting the ball hard ever and that 59.5% ground ball rate and diminished speed makes his BABIP look like it belongs where it is.

Farrell said last night that Hanley's shoulders flared up again. When Nunez gets back, I can't see Hanley getting much playing time. I expect Nunez and Pedroia to share 2B/DH for most games and definitely in the playoffs. I wonder if Hanley's playoff spot is in jeopardy.

Farrell's viewing this pennant race as an extended rehab assignment for Holt. It's unbelievable, except that you can expect Farrell to do stuff like this. It seems like every game he makes at least one glaringly bad, logic-defying decision.

I wonder if Hanley's playoff spot is in jeopardy. I think they'll carry him - they still need to deal with him for at least one more year. But it's a fair question that if he's not starting, does he have utility on a playoff roster? Farrell's viewing this pennant race as an extended rehab assignment for Holt. It's unbelievable, except that you can expect Farrell to do stuff like this. It seems like every game he makes at least one glaringly bad, logic-defying decision. I think you're slightly overstating the Holt thing. It will be his fifth start since August 25, and he has 25 plate appearances in those 20 days. His playing time has fallen off even more since Sept. 2.

His playing time has fallen off even more since Sept. 2. It's the time to see who should be on the playoff roster. Holt has made it pretty clear that he's not very playable except as a warm body. I wish they'd give Lin some of his playing time to keep him in game shape with hitting and to continue to evaluate him.
