My first choice to be manager is the Phillies top choice for their vacant managerial position according to Jon Heyman - looks like Gabe Kapler will be the Phillies manager. I'm disappointed the Sox didn't interview him. Perhaps Cora winds up a better manager, and maybe the bi-lingual thing is a huge thing, but I do know that I was impressed by Kapler's thirst for knowledge. He's extremely analytical and if he relates to the players well, he's going to make an excellent manager. He probably would have been my first choice with Cora second, but who knows? Maybe the Sox picked exactly the guy they should have? Time will tell. Espada had been rumored to be in consideration for a spot on Cora's staff.

With the announcement of several coaches, I'm going to suggest any further discussion of the staff go there.

That's good news, but Farrell also did that a lot this year.

That's good news, but Farrell also did that a lot this year. Probably means less saves if used correctly. Kimbrel is chasing saves records. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

I don't think this is nearly as much of an issue as you might think. Kimbrel recorded saves in 35 of his 67 appearances this year. It's not like he's sitting there saying to only pitch him if he can record a save. That said, Farrell really didn't bring him in early all that much this year. He only entered in the 8th 6 times, and 5 of those were in a one-month span from May 7 to June 6. He pitched the 9th in 64 of his 67 appearances. Of the other three, he entered in extras twice, and in the third, he pitched the 8th, down 6-4, and the Sox dropped a 10-spot in the 9th. Of course, using Kimbrel differently also requires the right pieces are around him. As we've discussed, it's really easy to use Miller as a relief ace when you also have Cody Allen.
