Wow, I haven't thought about Casey Kelly in years. I remember seeing him a few times when he was in high school, always thought he'd be a solid pitcher in the league. It kind of blows my mind how long it's been, and that he never established himself.

Interesting. Trying to prove he can make it in the majors again? What’s the talent level in Japan vs AAA? He did fairly well here last year. Would no one give him a shot on a major league team?

I've long thought that the system of minor league free agency could be improved. Many players change teams each year, trying to find an organization that might have an opening for them should they have a breakout season. But even if they do, they can end up blocked. A group of relievers all sign with a team that is short on bullpen depth, and one or two has a breakout and blocks the others.
Wouldn't it be cool if players could play with the same AAA team for several straight years while still maximizing their shot at MLB? They could play for the hometown team, if one existed. That would return AAA ball to something much closer to what it used to be. Wouldn't the PawSox be a bigger draw if the non-prospects were half or mostly guys who had been New England high school stars? And the rest were guys who had been with the club and had been become familiar faces? It would create rooting interests and rivalries at the AAA level that at present don't remotely exist.
The funny thing is, I've been working for years on ways to make this happen for and today I just came up with a better idea.
1) All mlfa's who signed for ml minimum and are not NRI's constitute the common pool. Any one can be selected by any MLB team at any time. If you have a breakout year from the common pool, you get to play for the first MLB team that thinks they can use you. That's 30 times the odds of making the show.
I thought of adding a system where players so selected pass through waivers (which is to say, a team below them in the standings can select them instead), but if you don't have that, it encourages teams to select a player sooner rather than waiting to see if someone else above them in the standings does.
Some players who got selected because of an injury and DL stint would get DFA'd when they were no longer needed and would return to their AAA club. Some guys might get several such cups of coffee in one season. That would be fun to follow ... each time he'd hope to perform well enough to earn a permanent job.
2) Players who get an NRI and /or sign for more than MLB minimum are exempt from the common pool, but only for a length of time dependent on their salary. All such players would be exempt through May 15. Above a certain salary figure, June 15. Above yet another figure, you control them as long as possible -- through July 15. This gives clubs a chance to fill their deadline needs from any elite NRI's who were blocked.
3) When a player who was an NRI and / or signed for above minimum becomes eligible for the common pool and a team wants him, this is being ""claimed from the common pool," and his parent club then has 24 hours to select him themselves.
4) When such a player is claimed by more than one team on his first day of eligibility, and is not subsequently selected by his parent club, he becomes a free agent.
For NRI's, this system is like a universal opt-out.

Matt Dominguez signs with a Japanese team. If only we knew where there was a 1B/3B that could replace his at bats in Pawtucket...

Appeared in 106 games for Reds in 2016, spent 2017 in AAA with Milwaukee. Third go-round with the club. I love his Red Sox transaction history: August 25, 2012: Traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers with players to be named later, James Loney and Allen Webster to the Boston Red Sox for Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto and cash. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Rubby De La Rosa (October 4, 2012) and Jerry Sands (October 4, 2012) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade. December 26, 2012: Traded by the Boston Red Sox with Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel and Jerry Sands to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt. ... August 30, 2014: Traded by the Baltimore Orioles with Jemile Weeks to the Boston Red Sox for Michael Almanzar and Kelly Johnson. November 4, 2014: Granted Free Agency.

Entirely possible that Cora's fingerprints are on this one.
EDIT: Actually, no, I think you're confusing the World Baseball Classic and the Caribbean Series. Neither player was on the WBC team Cora was the GM for, and De Jesus has never played for Caguas, the Puerto Rican winter league team that Cora has also been the GM of. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Cora, familiar with the Puerto Rican De Jesus, suggested him.

I know this was tongue in cheek, but he's coaching baseball in the DR. Here's a semi-recent interview he had with the New York Times in which he sounds like he's mellowed with age: www.facebook.com/nytimes/videos/10151129341634999
