Is he worth a look?

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure he's finished.

Yeah, averaging 87 on the FB...I think that ship has sailed. I don’t see him adding 6-7 mph going to the ‘pen, and his command/control’s never been great.

Sure. I'm a sucker for guys who used to be good and it's not my money. I'm not particularly worried that the four innings or whatever per week he'd get at Pawtucket would get in the way of someone else's development. Like, the whole Mark Prior thing in 2012 didn't work but it also didn't hurt anyone.

Yeah I guess in that context anyone is worth a look really. Maybe it's just my perspective, but he had literally nothing left when I saw him start for the Angels this past year. I felt more bad for him at the time, because he had built up such a amazing resume before his big fall as a pitcher.

The danger with someone like Lincecum is if he is a mirage in Spring Training and he makes the roster in place of a person without options left. Remember the spring training Grady Sizemore had in 2014.

Okay, so the downside is Tim Lincecum taking like 18 innings from Ben Taylor or Brandon Workman? That's not nothing, but...
EDIT: And if this hypothetical version of Lincecum looks good enough in spring training to win a job over someone like Workman, that means he's not throwing 87 mph straightballs and that giving him a minor league contract was a good idea.

My kneejerk reaction was no way - he is beyond cooked.
But after reading what Jeff Passan wrote, reasons 2 thru 4 make me say let's look at him during spring training. Maybe he's a #5 starter with potential for more. Maybe he's the 8th inning guy they're looking for. Maybe he's cooked, but I don't think it hurts to see what he looks like now.

That's probably the real upside. If Joe Blanton and Zach Duke can have second careers as effective middle relievers, literally any washed up starter is worth a look in that capacity. As far as him being a starter... I mean, if he's actually healthy now, cool, but starting is the thing that made him unhealthy in the first place. If your body couldn't hold up to a certain activity in your 20s, it's probably going to hold up even less well to that activity in your 30s, no matter what kind of shape you've gotten yourself into.

A poll/thread was really needed to determine whether we should sign a guy who did not play in the majors in 2017 and has not done anything of value in a number of years?

It’s more a baseball thing than a Red Sox thing. We’re all baseball lovers here and this is a good story and seeing a comeback story like Lincecum would be amazing. Throw logic out the window for a second and let’s just enjoy the attempt.

Should have done this with Hill. To ignore a comeback (from hip surgery) of a two time CYA winner would be myopic.

We need pitching depth and sometimes you have to take a chance!

To be fair, there's not much to say about Lincecum other than "sure, bring him to camp and see if there's anything there". He probably ends up on a team with a friendlier park and a weaker rotation anyway.

If we're talking about a minor league contract, I don't see what he issue is. It's not like as if it's anything unusual for any team including the Sox. Not much to lose, but potentially a lot to gain.

Tim Lincecum will be throwing for MLB Scouts on February 15th. This was announced by Kyle Boddy of Driveline Baseball a data-driven baseball Performance Training Center where Lincecum has been working out. Lincecum's come back is an interesting story and its own but after reading about Driveline baseball that's even more interesting there programs and workshops are worth looking at.
