In today's world, with Skyping and video messaging from just about anywhere, it seems like the importance/significance of the Winter Meetings has been lost, somewhat. The need to have all GMs and agents in the same place, right after the season ends, before everyone dissipates to their separate parts of the country/world for the winter, isn't what it used to be. Maybe it would be better to push the Meetings back til January, or even canceled altogether.

The Winter Meetings are actually a business expo for the minor leagues. They are not actually held for the reasons that get written about, for meetings between MLB front offices and other front offices or agents/players. There's a job fair, there are other events - many things go on other than what most of us think about regarding the winter meetings.
My point is they aren't moving them or canceling them.

Conference calls and skype can never replicate, simulate or replace an annual meeting of the clan, including the pillars of this small universe. Baseball issues are best discussed and decided in the meeting rooms, restaurants, bars and pubs of the venue. For many it is also a wonderful break following the grind, with family and good friends.
