Will Hector Velazquez get the 5th spot in the rotation? He’ll definitely get his shot in spring training to fight it out with the likes of Wright, Elias, Beeks, and Haley (assuming they put Brian Johnson straight into the bullpen). Velazquez was lights out last season at pretty much every level.
AAA: 102.0 innings, 2.21 ERA, 1.00 WHIP MXN: 9.2 innings, 0.93 ERA, 0.93 WHIP MLB: 24.2 innings, 2.92 innings, 1.13 WHIP
All together: 136.1 innings, 2.25 ERA, 1.02 WHIP
Take out that poor major league debut and the numbers drop even more. There’s always the train of thought to maintain his options, which would be smart to do. But purely on pitching talent, he’s probably the best option there at the moment.

I'm also hopeful Velazquez becomes a solid starter. His stuff isn't great, but he seems to be a very skilled and experienced pitcher who should outplay his talent.
If he's a top 5 starter, and Johnson and Wright are in the bullpen, injured or traded, then I'm sure they would keep him in the majors. No point in worrying about options with a 29 year old who still has the 2 remaining.

Hard to find any real redeeming qualities about him in his peripherals or batted ball data. His BABIP and LOB% were abnormal.

Are E-Rod and Wright both going to be late coming back? What are their estimates?
I'd certainly rather see Brian Johnson get the chance -- if for no other reason that to create some small trade value.
Edit: if I am reading it correctly, Johnson is out of options and Velazquez has 2 more?

Johnson is out of options and it's been reported that he's going to be tried as a reliever (as will Elias, who has options). We'll see if they initially think about stretching him out though.
Wright (also out of options) is (physically at least) projected to be ready for the start of the season. Rodriguez is due back in mid-April, but we'll see.
Personally, I can't imagine that Velazquez is so much better than both Wright and Johnson that he makes the club over one or both. If I'm the Sox I keep as much of that depth as possible.

Today Hector Velazquez gets to start for the Red Sox against the Minnesota Twins who will have Aaron Siegers pitching for them. Velazquez is looking to improve honest 2017 debut season
