That's how I see it until ST is done. Wanted some players higher and some players lower. It's a tough game but I did what I thought was best for the major league team.
I *love* Austin Maddox as a dark horse in the ‘pen. Idk what he did to reduce his walk rate (fingers crossed that it’s not small-sample noise), but he’s got a big-league CH and throws gas. His 95+ average in mlb was an eye-opener for me. Peripherals are less impressive but I think there’s something there www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=14241&position=P&season=2017. I was excited way back when they took him in the 3rd round back in ‘12, admittedly because he’d hit 98, but he just struggled badly for years as a starter after being a collegiate closer. His stuff clearly plays up in the bullpen, and as a league-minimum arm he could be huge if he misses a few more bats and keeps the control gains he showed last fall. It’s easy to forget about him with Kelly, Barnes, Smith and probably Thornburg back, Hembree, Workman’s return...but he’s exactly the sort of arm they’ve struggled to develop but he could be a really nice breakout player. It’s not sexy, but developing setup arms has huge value in today’s game, both in terms of trade return, and as a cost-saver. Quality back-end non-closers are getting multi-year deals with AAVs in the $5-9M range. That’s not huge money, but it adds up.
